Try leaving the freshwater tank drain open and fill your freshwater tank as usual. Let the water drain while the tank is filling. Do this until it runs clear. This will get you a tank that is ready for sanitizing. If the water never runs clear, there is an obvious problem with the tank shedding something that causes the water to become orange.

Curious, is this a metal tank or plastic? Could be a rust thing...

once maybe twice a year but the only water I put in the tank is city water that has been treated.

I did it when we bought the rig, never since. That's some 6 years ago.

I made the mistake of puting about 10 gallons in my fresh tank, using well water. You talk about STINK!!
Didn't realize it until I flushed the toilet while traveling. Yuck!
I drained the tank, pulled the filter and flushed out the fresh water lines until it stopped smelling.
Don't use well water for fresh water!!

I have put Rocky Mountain creek water (using a pump) into the fresh tank for showers and dishes when we dry camp. The trailer is two years old and have no desire to clean the fresh tank since we don't drink from it. I guest I should bleach my tank but no one has gotten sick yet. I do drain after every use and flush it with home water. I figured if the fish can survive in the water it is OK for me to swim or bath in.

Well we've only had a water tank in a TT for about 12 years and over 70,000 miles. We've considered sanitizing tank, but so far have managed to resist the urge.

Well you did ask.

I always keep water in my tank. We use the water for all uses including cooking and drinking making coffee, tea etc..

I sanitize mine once or twice a year. using 1 cup of bleach per 40 gallons, fill tank run water through every tap let sit 8hrs min drain, fill, flush.

I never connect a hose to my RV unless it goes through our filter.

I dose any well or non chlorinated water when I fill the tank using 1 tablespoon per 10 gallons this insures enough chlorine to protect the water while in sitting in the tank.

Wait until you find out about Cryptosporidiosis. One of the very common things you need to be concerned with when using "Rocky Mountain creek water". You wash you dishes in it and that's all it takes.
