Towing a 26' Rage'n that is about 12000 fully loaded. I'm pulling it with a 2005 GMC Duramax 4WD CC SWD. I have no problems in the power department. However, I need some new E rated tires. I made the mistake of letting tire dealer convince me that some D rated Pirelli Scorpions would be okay. They never felt just right but after 20K miles, the rear tires warped this weekend on a return trip from Mammoth.
It looks like the weight & the 100 degree heat caused the (2) rear tires to "warp". It was so bad my front end was shaking if I drove over 30 MPH. I had to un-hitch and go into Victorville to get new tires. The shop also only had D rated tires but that was OK to get me home.
Now I need to find some E rated tires. I currently have P285/75R16 tires but will switch to a 17" wheel if necessary. This is not a daily driver vehicle so ride "quality/comfort" takes a back seat to towing a heavy load safely. Anybody have any ideas for me? All the brochures I was looking thru at the shop showed pretty slim pickings in my current tire size.

I think you can get a BFG All Terrain, E rated tire in that size. I would go with that.
Yep, just verified through Discount's website, you can get that tire in that size.

I second the BFG's, only tire I use on my truck and van. I know the Toyo's also come highly recommended.

I've had Michelin LTX M/S on my X since I bought it. When I got it, it had 114k on the odo and I would guess about 1/2 the tread life - just turned 147k last week and the tires, although worn, have been great. They are Load Range E 265/75/16.
I know others that have been happy with the BFGs (little know fact, BFG no longer makes tires - they sold out to Michelin in 1988).
I've heard several people say stay away from the Silent Armor tires.

I used Firestone Transforce on my Excursion. They did really well. You can go to Tire Rack and read tons of reviews on various tires.

I am running Silent Armor 305/60R 16 and they have been performing just fine.

I am running BFG 285/75R-16" Load range "E".
Not quite as heavy as you pulling but am very happy with them.

Ditto here. These tires are one of the highest load rated E's I could find--3750 lbs each. Some E's seem to be rated to only 3425 lbs- so watch out! The only other higher load rating I found was on a Toyo M-55. So far so good with the BFG's. They run quiet and smooth. Sometimes I see 7k on the rear axle of my TV.

Michelin LTX M/S gets my vote. I have ran 4 sets of these tires on my trucks and have gotten over 100,000 miles on every set. They are one tough tire. In fact I just ordered another set for a new truck and foune them on line for $158.41 ea. good luck

OK, these tire manufacturers have me baffled with where they come up with their load ratings. I've narrowed my choices down to (3) tires...for now.
TOYO Open Country MT (all E rated):
285/75R16 3740 lbs
285/75R17 3195 lbs...why the big drop?
285/75R18 4080 lbs
TOYO Open Country AT:
16 3305 lbs...D rated
17 3970 lbs...E rated and a huge JUMP rtaher than DROP like on the 17" MT
18 4080 lbs...E rated
BFG A/T:
16 3750 lbs
17 3195 lbs...D rated and another big drop like the Toyo MT
18 3640 lbs...E rated but no increase from the 16" like the Toyo models?
What confuses me the most is why the big drop on the Toyo MT and BFG when you go to a 17" but it doesn't continue to drop when you go to the 18"? I want to get new wheels too (leaning to American Racing ATX series "Thug") but there's slim pickings in 16" wheels. next step would be to go to 17" wheel but tire ratings drop is a downer. That leaves me moving up to an 18" wheel. The wheels are only $14 more but the tires go up alot!! However, since it's a tow vehicle only, that 4000 lb per tire tow capacity does sound pretty nice on the Toyo models.
I've had BFG A/T's many time and they were fine everywhere but the snow for me. I've had (2) sets of the Toyo AT's in the past and they were awesome, 2nd only to Bridgestone REVO's Ive had but are only made in D rated. I love the looks of the Toyo MT but may go BFG if $$ becomes a factor when i pull the trigger next month.
