We've done a lot of research on the forum and have accumulated much information for our fall trip to OR thanks to folks here. Our primary focus is on the coast and the Columbia River Gorge area. We'd also like to try to see Crater Lake.
We've read the frequent posts about needing reservations for the popular coastal state parks in the summer, but what we can't seem to find is information about September. We'll be traveling from the second week in Sept. or so until we need to leave to be in Tucson by Oct. 15th.
We're generally the type to make reservations, but we'd like to stay looser on this trip. Any thoughts on the risks of going without firm reservations?
Thanks.

Once school starts you should be fine.
That is a very good time to go to the Oregon coast.

We have gone to the coast many times in Sept. & Oct. and never make reservations, just get to the campground by 2 or 3 PM.
On Friday & Saturdays at the popular CGs you may want to get in as early as you can or just stay at the one that you are at until Sunday

I agree - weekdays likely not a problem but weekends will still have lots of folks hitting the camgrounds and staying put or stopping early Friday and not moving On Saturday might be good a good strategy. ENjoy - is beautiful!

Do try to see Crater Lake, but weather can be tricky there, even in late Sept it can snow. However, it's absolutely worth the effort to go there or wait for a break in the weather.

September is a wonderful time to visit the Oregon coast. We've never made reservations for that time of year. Take in Crater Lake first and the Gorge last, because it gets cold fast at Crater and stays hot in the Gorge.

Crater Lake will be the issue. Sometimes the roads close on mid September.

I have many friends that lived on the coast and they said that Sept is the best month to be on the Oregon coast. it's just before the storm season.

We would prefer your staying home in Sept as we go to the Oregon coast every year at this time. Since it is without doubt the best time of the year, we would have at least one more FHU site available if you stayed home. You can join us there in early November when we go back to enjoy the start of the stormy season...there is nothing quite like it. It's far less crowded then as well. Bring your anorak.

I agree with the suggestion to see Crater Lake first. You wouldn't want to miss it because of an early snow. And don't worry about resevations. There are plenty of parks to choose from, both public and private. Enjoy!
