Rethread it? A 16oz propane bottle? We're talking about a $6 bottle of propane and you're gonna take it to a machine shop? You silly Californians.
SHOOT IT!!
Weren't you my neighbor when we were kids?
I was thinking more of building a fire arround it and standing back 100 yards. Hey better yet, start it on fire and shoot at it!!!

do you have recycle place or contact your garbage man and ask him if they will take it. Most of the time if you do take stuff like that you have to hand it to them so it doesn't go through the crusher and explode. like insulin needles, they take them, just have to make the driver aware of them by handing them directly to them.

Some of these suggestions brought to mind the old story of the fellow who decided to take his first parachute jump. After taking the training, he was ready to go. He jumped, counted to three, and pulled the ripcord. Nothing happened. No problem, he was trained for this. He counted to three again, pulled the backup cord -- nothing.
As he plummetted toward earth at nearly 100 mph, he was suddenly shocked to look down and see someone ascending toward him, also doing nearly 100 mph.
The jumper shouted down, "Hey! Do you know anything about parachutes?"
The fellow coming up shouted back, "No! Do you know anything about gas stoves?"

Not to jump the thread but where do you take the empty small propane canisters? Can they be set out in the recycling? Garbage? or do I have to take them to the Haz Mat recycling center?

Around here we just shoot them. Make big noise with good flash, better than shooting bottle rockets at trashbags full of propane.

Hmmm well the empty ones we do put in the trash...never really thought of it. I am glad the firedepartment helped you out. We have a solid waste recycling, who does "hazardous household chemical recycling" a couple of times a year. Also, here in the "boonies" I would have probably taken it to the propane place, they know what to do with that stuff. The rethreading idea caused me to cringe....lets see, metal against metal on a propane tank...duh???

instead of shooting it, why not toss it in the camp fire?

Another vote here for: SHOOT IT!
Now lots of tax dollars will be consumed so a local FD can have fun blowing it up. The guv'mit will spend several thousand taxpayer dollars to take care of a $3 propane bottle. Sheesh.
Are you people serious about calling hazmat, FD's, etc? Maybe call in the National Guard too, just to be safe? I'm picturing trucks, helicopters, SWAT teams all converging on a house with a defective propane bottle. LOL! Wow, what has happened to our world?
Next time, if you're not going to get out your tap & die set to rethread it, then just shoot it or burn it.
