Anyone had experience using a CPAP machine while dry camping? I use my REMister with humidifier 7 ot 8 hours nightly and have no idea how much power it uses.

Some place on the CPAP you will find the voltage and current or voltage and watts. From this you can figure out how long your battery will last if you are using an inverter or if the CPAP works on 12 volts. Mine is AC only.

Most CPAP machines will run on the smallest of small inverters. if you don't have access to an inverter some CPAPs have a 12volt power option.

One good deep cycle battery will last several nights, at least.

I use one powered by a 300 watt inverter. Can't use the humidifier because it draws too many watts. Mine gives the wattage on the botton. You might have to go to REMister's website and look up your model.

My DH just bought a Puritan Barret GoodKnight 420G that runs on either electircity or a 12 volt battery. He is in love with it. It's pretty small and very quiet.
He had to fax his prescription to the company where we bought it.
We highly recommend this unit.

My nephew uses a CPAP machine, and goes hunting for 2 1/2 weeks each year in Colorado. They dry camp in one of the national forests. He has a generator, but he bought an inverter on the way to Colorado last year to use with the CPAP machine at night. The inverter didn't work. I think it either lacked the wattage to run the machine, or the sine wave pattern generated by the inverter was too crude. He did find an inverter that would run the machine, but it wouldn't work all night off his one trailer battery, along with the furnace, without cranking the generator to recharge it. So if you don't have 2 trailer batteries already, you will probably wind up adding at least one more in order to run the CPAP machine.

If someone else doesn't give you more and better information, I will contact my nephew (he lives in Louisiana, I live in Texas)and find out exactly what the problem was and how he solved it. That happened months ago, and I've slept several times since then , so I've forgotten all the details.

I'm not sure what the wattage is on my inverter, but I found the same problem with running the humidifier--it totally drains the batteries (we have an extra battery just to run my CPAP). What I do is use Ayr nasal gel and let the CPAP run with water in the reservoir, but the humidifier turned off. The air circulates over the water and picks up some moisture, though not a lot. The nasal gel helps keep my nose from drying out too much.

Same here.

The electric heater is way too much load plus trying to do it with an inverter will kill the heating unit because it needs a pure sine wave because it is not just a straight heating element. The manual covers it correctly if interested and I am just going off of memory.

Hi,

You can run many CPAP machines with a small inverter. Costco sells a 500 watt model for only $30. I tested one in my RV, it draws about 6 amps at 12 VDC. So if you sleep for 8 hours X 6 amps, figure about 60 AH per night.

THe RV will consume another 35 AH per day, lights about 20 AH per day. Figure your battery needs accordingly. I have 4 batteries with a total capacity of 440 amp hours, and that would run the machine 2-3 night along with lights and furnace before the batteries got really low. Recharging during the day is a great way to extend the battery life.

I would recomend at least 2 batteries. Then run the charger for a hour in the morning and near bedtime. This will provide the most amp hours per hour of generator run time. Usually the second and third hour the generator is running, it is putting back amps into the batteries at a slower rate than the first hour.

I also use solar panels to make up for some of the power that I use. You can look at those here. But remember that a generator is less expensive than solar panels, solar's only great advantage is being really quiet! and once you pay for it, no more noise or fuel for it.
