I have a '93 Itasca Sunrise 27' P-30, 454 TBI. Last winter when we were in Florida it acted like it wasn't getting fuel at highway speeds. This only seemed to happen late in the day after several miles and warm temps. When I would shut it off [because it was barely running] and restart it would be fine for a while.
Found a chevy dealer that did work on motorhomes and they put it on the diagnostic machine and it said there was a fuel delivery problem. The diagnosis was that there was rust in the tank that would plug the sock on the pump and when I shut it off the rust would fall away. Made sense to me except that we had no more problems after we left Florida and got in to cooler weather and all the way home to northern NY state.
After we got home I took out the tank and found some rust in the bottom [not sure if it was enough to cause the problem] and flushed it out and put in a new fuel pump and sock.
Has anyone out there had this problem and has any info to share? I want to make sure I have the problem fixed before we head south this winter.
I am thinking at this point that the problem might be electrical and heat related.
Any info will be welcome
thanks
Dan

Could it have been vapor locking? That is worse with gasohol I read in one thread.

Did you change the fuel filter on the frame rail. That is the first thing to check.

If it does it again take the gas cap of and see if there is any air trying to get into the tank. It could be a venting problem altho with all the alcohol in the gas now- that would seem remote.

TBI & port fuel injection don't normally suffer the vapor lock of the old days.

I would bet you fixed the problem with the new in tank fuel pump. The fuel pump is cooled by the fuel in the tank the hotter the fuel the hotter the pump will run also they can (could) run hot with a low tank.

In-tank fuel pumps like lots of fuel for cooling. If the gas level gets low a lot, the pump is more likely to act up or fail.

I am wondering if your pump is getting hot and acting up. Where was the fuel level when your problem occured?

Whenever I have a fuel problem, I put in a pressure gauge.

I had a P-30, 454 and fought that problem for years before it was found that the coach had settled down on the chassis a bit. Does one of the rear corners look a bit lower than the other or maybe not as much clearance at top of one of the rear wheel wells? This caused a fuel line to rub against the chassis and developed a Small Hole in the rubber line. All would be fine until it was hot outside, softening the rubber slightly. Than when I needed to use more throttle, as when climbing a long hill, the engine would start sucking air thru the chaffed line area and almost die. No backfire or anything like that...just lose power. Let off the gas pedal and it would go away. Stop and shut it down and it would be fine for minutes or maybe days, but it would always come bacck at the worst time. My chaffed spot was above the gas tank. Drove me nuts.

Yeah, that would be a stinker to find. That's why I like a fuel pressure gauge. They help you find the tough ones. Heck, even a low pressure switch to turn on an idiot light would be helpful.
