I run a 2008 King Ranch Screw 4X4 longbed and after driving diesels for almost 9 years (a few F-150's mixed in), I'm okay towing our 6,500# travel trailer with my 2008 F-150. It won't win any awards in the tow department, but it will do. I can't say I'd feel super comfortable in an emergency situation as our trailer weighs what the truck does... and who'd win the tail wagging contest? I also have 20" factory aluminum rims, but opted to put LT tires on, which have increased my rolling diameter, width, weight, and resistance... certainly not helping the tow package. I'd undoubtedly go with smaller rims next time, if possible.
I'm trying Troyer tunes this weekend for the first time towing. I've run their tunes before for daily driving, but not really for towing. Their tunes with my AF1 intake and MBRP exhaust, I'm feeling pretty confident that this F-150 will wake up considerably and bridge the diesel to gas gap adequately enough to keep me interested in keeping this truck. I log about 50,000 a year driving unloaded, and about 5,000 towing (at best). For me, the F-150 is a better choice than the Superduty Diesel... right now with diesel at $0.70 more a gallon.
Please keep us informed on the performance, especially towing, of your Troyer Tune. There are many of us with F150s that are interested in any assistance available.
I was averaging 17.6 on my daily commute of 23 miles each way at about 60mph. I averaged about 11 pulling my Hybrid loaded with my Grizzly, around 7,500pnds over some pretty tall passes, 10,000+ and most pulling done at 8,000+. Last weekend I added a AEM Brute Force CIA, a 3" Flowmaster exhaust, 4.56 gears, Mag-Hytec diff cover, and am impatiently waiting for my custom tunes for my Edge/Gryphon from Power Hungry Performance. With everything but the tunes, I've increased my daily commute to 19.8. And it sounds oh so good.

I know, it blows my mind as well. I did a lot of reading on several forums for a year before I finally made up my mind. On speeds over 65 it hurts me, but I hardly ever go over that for any extended amount of time. The 4.56's help me get my 35's rolling and keep them rolling, plus the other toys I added helped as well I'm sure. As long as I keep my foot off the floor, except when playing, it seems to be helping.
From what I have read here it all seem s the same as my older F150 5.4. I run mostly highway and get 19 mpg and 9 mpg towing 6000 lbs. I was going to buy a new F150 this year but I keep putting it off because of the diesel. My concern with the diesel is that it will get worse mpg the the 5.4. My buddy bought a Jeep Liberty diesel and found it the mpg's were worse then the gas plus the maintenance was very expensive. Jeep did away with the diesel do to the lack of interest, wasn't that a 4.4 they offered also.

The article linked above states a mileage improvement over the currently offered 5.4L. IMHO, a 4.4L diesel with the new 6 speed auto trans will be a beautiful combo.

That's what I'm hoping for. My f150 still runs great so waiting should be no problem. The only reason I want a new truck is I want a crew cab other then that my truck still runs like new.
