After Kathy (klm) mentioned about dragging hitch when getting on and off the ferries with Class A's, I began to wonder if disconnecting the toad and driving it on/off by itself would be better. Any comments?

My hitch has skid bars on the bottom. They will/have hit whether toad is attached or not.

It wouldn't make any difference. If the hitch is going to drag it will do so with or without the toad attached. In some ports the ramp angles an be pretty steep at high and low tide, and dragging might occur.

Disconnect the toad to save money! You are paying for the extra 3 feet of tow bar and not getting the advantage of the driver rate. It is also easier to get the vehicles on and off the ferry.

I agree with Rocky2 above. Save money by disconnecting. That's what we did when we came back via ferry. Even better reason for disconnecting is that it's easier to maneuver on the car deck when you don't have to worry about the toad. Also the parking crews prefer that you disconnect, at least that's what they told me.

Having been off many a BC Ferry I'd say I'd drag regardless and the hassle of unhooking isn't worth it. Just go slow and alot of the deckhands will give you an OK or stop if you're going to hit. Never hit yet. I've wondered a few times but never actually scraped.

Forget the toad. Just bring lots of good food to eat. I hear the Ferry's not like the Love Boat. Just a big floating bus with spendy snack bar food.

Some of the smaller ferries (Prince William Sound) requires that you detoad (or at least that is what they told us). Example: DP had to be backed off ferry from Cordova to Whittier.
I believe we also had to do this between Skagway and Haines in years past.

I asked the same question of BC Ferries a couple of years ago. You're right about saving money BUT, if you disconnect, the car and the motor home go into different lineups. If it's busy, there's a chance you both might not get boarded on the same ferry.
At least that's what they told me.
