We recently purchased a storage building for our motorhome. Before it arrives we are deciding on what to lay down as the parking surface. We have decided not to go with cement at this time. We would like to put down a cost-effective material until we can afford cement. The area is 14x44, so we would like to stick with something more economical such as gravel, rock, etc. We have a solid base. Any suggestions on the type of foundation and if it is necessary to lay down plastic or other material to keep the weeds out.

I would put down crushed stone. It is like trap rock but real fine. I bonds good and will seal out weeds and has a low compression rate. It is like a 1/16 to 1/8 inch flack. It is often used under pavers or flag stone as a sub base. After a few years you might just want to go with a black top on top of it. Bill

Cheap gravel makes the most sense if you are going to pave in the future.

We used Grade 8 limestone for a gravel path back to and including the pad for the camper.

If the ground is solid and you are planning cement in the future I wouldn't put anything down. Put a mat in front of the door and save the money and work gravel would cost.

I put gravel down and it packed hard as a rock. The problem I find is that after a hard rain, the wheels and 2 feet up the side gets alot of sand from the hard rain. Needs to be cleaned every trip.

I put down apx. 3" of road base and then about 1 1/2" of what we call 3/4" crushed blue rock. Set up really good and drains great. Very clean and looks really nice. I suggest you call a local rock/gravel supplier in your area and see what they suggest.
As for weed control I used a product called "Sahara" and nothing grows when it's down. You may have to contact a licenesd landscaper to get it.

Pack a good base and use re-milled asphalt. It packs nicely and wears well. We have our drive in re-milled asphalt.

We used 2 in crushed stone about 10 inches deep. Packed in really well and stone "locks" together good with little shifting. Was relatively inexpensive and easy to do-it-yourself!

I used 6" of what I called "road mix". They knew what I was talking about when I ordered it from the sand and gravel place. It is a combination of sand and crushed gravel about 3/4" in size. I don't have gutters on that side of the house and the water drains right through it. I put it right on top of the grass that was growing there and nothing has ever grown through it. A few weeds pop up here and there, but I hit them with Round-Up 2-3 times a year to take care of it. When I installed in, I rented a small compactor from a rental shop and compacted 800 sqft in about 2hrs and it has never formed ruts or settled.
The only down side is that it does stick to my tires and gets drug out into the street. I park two cars on the same material in front of my house and when I drive them, the gravel ends up on the sidewalk and I have to sweep it back.
