i suppose you have gotten the calculator out and crunched some numbers to see how long it would take you to even out the cost of the trade and spensive diesel plus fuel, to include maintenance.
I bought back when fuel oil (no 2 diesel) was reasonable - 99. This day I sure wish I had a gasser under the hood.
I usually only knock out 10 going thru the smokies to the east coast from IL.
I've crunched the nos. and a gasser loses hands down due to mpg. A V10, based on forum comments, gets approx. 40% less fuel economy towing than a DMax. The only advantage a gasser gives you is a cheaper fill up, but more of them.
Ours is a few years older, but it's a safe bet the 2008's won't do any better.
Average around town 14.5, but I'm only 4 miles from work. Highway 19.5 running around 65. Real world towing 11,000 lbs........
2008 trip 3600 miles from MO west to CO and on to Las Vegas 9.5
2007 trip 3000 miles from MO east to VA and outer banks 10.5
2006 trip 2500 miles from MO to UP of MI and back 11.5
2005 trip 3200 miles from MO to FL and back 10.5
All the above based on the DIC on board computer.
I don't see how some get 13+ towing. Are they possibly stttrreeetttccchhinng the truth?

If you read the post, I am towing a LOW PROFILE TT that is 4000# less than what you are towing. I have had tanks that have been 13.5 mpg on the hwy (hand calc) running 65-70 mph in Alabama (flat land). Sorry if you think I am sttttrrreetttccchhiinnngg the truth, I don't sell GMC's I just own one.
I always double check the DIC with hand calc's. So far they have matched with in 2 tenths of each other. I had a 1999 454 vortec 3500 dually CC and I was lucky to get 7mpg towing. Out west in the mountains I was averging 5 mpg with it. I will never go back to a gasser for towing. Love the 2008 GMC, the duramax and the Allison tranny. It's like going to heaven in a pickup truck.
