Due to a medical emergency we had to make a hastey retreat from the campsite we were staying at on the first night of our vacation, and as a result we left with an under inflated tire. We had a blowout about 60 miles down the road and this is the result.

Looking back, I really wish had had taken that extra minute to check the air pressure as I have had issues with that tire loosing pressure in the past. Changing a tire on an interstate with cars blowing by you at 70 MPH can be quite a hair raising experience. I'm just thanking my lucky stars that it was on the curb side and not the street side.
Camp on!

Many insurers consider this a "COLLISION" claim, so anything over your deductible would be covered...."Collision with a roadbed or anything thrown up against the vehicle" is language commonly used in claims. This is just a thought as your lead line seemed to inquire as to how you could minimize your loss.

$500 deductable.... I really doubt there's $500 damage, but I could be wrong.
I mostly posted this to point out that if you don't check your tires on a regular bassis, you can get bit. I have seen and heard stories of major damage caused by tire blowouts and I think I got off pretty easy. It really only ended up becoming a minor inconvenience and slowed us down by 20 minutes to get to the hospital..
BUT I won't get fooled again. Check your pressures EVERY day before you tow!!!!

Jeff I just got our first TPMS a few months ago and I really enjoy knowing what the tire pressures are at a glance and even if I forget to check the alarm system will remind me of a problem. Any system is worth the price. I just checked and our brand (SAF-TTE) goes for $260 for four tires or you could protect 8 for $420. Others like Pressure Pro I read and there are others I am sure so after having our system I would not want to go back to no system again.
It does seem like your damage was on the light side. It is the stressful times like you found yourself in that cause us to forget to do what we know to do. I hope everything worked out with your medical emergency that caused you to have to leave quickly.

you might try dent wizzard that works on autos. they can pull out dents and you dont know they are there. fairly cheap in this areaq, no painting, no holes. dent just disappears if its metal.
second point ive had five experiences with tire blowouts sooo. moral when you have a tire that loses air, especially in a short time or more than a couple of pounds, change it dont wait generally the tread has seperated from the inner cords and will blow soon, some chinese tires were defective from the factory and tend to seperate tread from the cords. five of mine were this way. no recall. and if you have one blow, save it to send back to tire seller. many of tghem will not pay the cost of new tire without old one. another lesson learned the hard way.

Thank God you are ok. This should be a warning for everyone. If a tire looses pressure there is a reason. It could be a nail or a bad valve. If you have to keep adding air you should ask yourself why. If you don't know why you should take it to a tire shop and have them check it. I had a brand new tire that kept going low and took it in. When they filled it up with air they blew the valve stem completely off. Better there in the shop than on the road.

Another reason a tire will lose air is a bad seal. Don't know if it is from installation or the flexing the tire has to endure due to turning radius. Sometimes the beads are loose and will require a reinstallation to set the seal beads on the tire.

Fabguy, that's definitely more than $500 in damage if you want it restored to like new condition. I was formerly a body/paint/chassis man for an upfitter slaving to put myself through school at night...
