Can an infrared thermometer be purchased at an auto parts store?
Also, what would be an average temperature on the wheels while traveling under a load..just a general range?
My 3500 lb axles with 10" brake drums get to 155 degrees near the drum edge on an 80 degree day towing on the interstate. This is with normal use, they go up 30 or more degrees with more stops.

FWIW, 140 deg. F. is generally considered to be the temp where you cannnot leave your hand on whatever it is that is getting warm for more than a couple of seconds.
Thanks for the help and suggestions. I now have an idea of what I should expect and be dealing with. I have a trip planned in a few weeks and will "road test" a bit before going out. I think I'm OK according to what I've read here. Will however get an infrared therm. to check.

Shoes shouldn't be too tight. When I put the new tires on a few weeks ago, I also checked shoes and adjustment. Tire spins freely, with just a very slight rub from the shoes.

Ok, but did you lubricate with high temp grease like Never Seeze (or equivalent) all contact points between shoes and back plates, magnet levers, and magnets where they slide on the lever ?
