Just noticed in the news the US border agents are now empowered to search a laptop computer. First, I never knew that they did not already have this power available to them.
So if you were an author and you toted a manuscript around in your laptop while on vacation and you decided to pass some time by being creative in a host country, are you breaking employment rules?

Guess that depends on the employer. Some companies forbid data to leave the work area. Motion Picture industry is very protective of their properties. So yes, you would be in violation, but that has nothing to do with the US Border Policy. It has been suggested in PC Magazine that important data be backed up to a "stick" and carried separate.

A "stick" is also known as a "jump drive". It is a USB device that you plug into a USB port it it automatically shows up as a "disk drive" on your "my computer" page. You pull it out of the USB port when not in use just like you would with the old 3.5" floppy technology.

There are people who have no idea that their rights and privileges in their home country can mean very little when they ask to visit another country.
People need to know what they can do, no matter how technical.
I started this topic over at a neighbors and some really had their minds blown on the whole border crossing issue, the stuff they can't bring into Canada and others what they can't bring into the U.S.
& I, I took the road less travelled by.

Why would this thread be moved? It is about a us/canada and I would never look for it over there but I now know about this little added item that can occur when crossing the boarder. I carry a laptop to download my pixs so I have a backup of them while I am on vacation I also burn a dv of them so I guess they can mess up my laptop if the see the need to. I would love to know what they are looking for.

The only new protocol that we noticed is that they now get into your rig when you are entering the states.

They only started that after 9/11. Unfortunately, it has become so onerous to cross into the states with a trailer that we just don't want the hassle unless we intend to do extensive travelling. All trailers are inspected interally.
One border guard scared the living bejeepers out of my DW. She opened the door for the fellow and he made her go in first and then the inquisition was on. He asked her if we were transporting any aliens into the US and she answered "no". He continued by asking if she was sure to which she replied "yes". He then went on to tell her that "you better not be lying, lady, or you're in a helluva lot of trouble." Needless to say my DW was scared stiff. The BG when through the trailer and checked every cupboard, shelf, nook and crany that he could find. All he found was pack of "all beef" weiners, which he confiscated. I wanted to report this fellow but my DW didn't want to make waves and in retrospect I figured it would be all for not. The one occassion has since made us wary of US Customs, but we've back to the US several times since and have not encountered shenigans of the like that my DW experienced.
We enjoy visiting all the great sites in the US has to offer, but we find that there is an underlying sense of uneasiness and armed camp mentality there, that we don't find in Canada. We used to dread the Canadian Customs, but now we don't. All they are interested in is whether or not you're bringing in too much cheap booze or too many smokes.
