Hamops, we have our petty tyrants in the same process too. I've read about them here. All that border guard was doing was power tripping for the day.

I've had the impression that rig inspections are sort of prorated, so that a certain number are done every day.

& I, I took the road less travelled by.

True, but it only takes one incident like that, to make you wary of all, because the mind doesn't forget them as easily as it does all the times that you've had no trouble at all.

I remember well the time I got picked for a thorough check. I had done my homework very carefully. I was crossing to buy my camper.

It didn't take long for it to come out that I had done my homework. & looking back on it, I recall border guards melting away and one being left to answer the details I hadn't ferreted out.

It was lucky I suppose that they picked that time, but then again I helped them do it. ie., "Your purpose in visiting the US at this time is?" Me: "I've come to buy a camper for this truck".

Right on! As Canadians, we, DW and I, have spent over $62,000 in USA in the last 12 months purchasing a Park Model (plus furnishings) and a 13 foot pop up Chalet TT. Can't say we are not doing our part to keep US economy going...

For years we US citizens used Canada the same way. There is nothing wrong trying to save a buck and spending where the buck goes further. As neighbors we do that with regularity. It has always been true and still is. I have no problem welcoming my neighbors here to save $$$ any more than I do when WE go north to do the same thing. I think it is great relationship.

Off topic, but then Sir Francis, you gave me the idea.

Now, when the $s became more even, we were told it was the weak US economy, you know, the mortgages, the increasing national debt, etc. all in the US.

Well, today, the Canuck $ dropped. The whiz kids/experts are crediting the drop in the barrel of oil. You know, stuff produced in Canada

Glad I don't have a trip down south on the cards this month.

Actually "Little Kopit" it wasn't my idea, I was responding to "flylipsdaddy" but inadvertently left their name off the post. Oh well.

Actually, I read what he said to mean if you talk computer talk without how that relates to the border, he would move it to technology corner.

& I immediately piped up that the least little thing can be very important for some of us.

I'd also like to bring out a comparison with personal luggage. I've heard the border guards can be careful when examining a suitcase, the stuff we wear.

But the stuff that may or may not show how our minds work, this they are saying they can impound and hold for examination without us for a reasonable length of time. It's like using chemicals to make us imobile and trying to examine our brains with some kind of connection.

& this on a piece of hardware, which because of internet cookies (et al) can contain stuff we didn't ask for and which doesn't reflect us at all.

In my not so humble opinion I wish I was a lawyer and had lots of $ to take that to the courts and follow through until we get some civil liberties back. Even if I don't live in that country, border crossing affects my civil rights.

The policy stated that anyone including American citizens returning to the US at any border crossing could have any electronic storage device confiscated for review and analysis of the data stored within. The policy went further to indicated this could also be expanded to books, documents and pamphlets in your possession. Just cause was not needed to conficate the documents or eqiupment since the data would be copied for future anlysis and the equipment returned to you at some future time and the copied data destroyed if no illegal data was found. As stated by a US citizen the US border guards doing the confiscating who would be on American soil would appear to be violating the US fourth Admendment by search and seizure on another US citizen without just cause.
The policy stated that one thing to be scrutinized would be copyright infringement with movies and music. How they could determine whether mp3's on my IPOD were not copies of legally owned CD's I had at home is beyond me.
I myself have begun to setup online data storage site to keep all my P&C data including Internet favorites off my laptop when crossing the border. You never know what might be consider questionable by some border guards. The other option is to setup remote access to your home PC and load a fresh OS on your laptop.
This topic was discussed last week in another library snd was deleted when it became partisan so lets try and keep politics out if possible
