We will be leaving Calif. on the 28th of November crossing at Lukeville and heading to Celestino RV resort for Dec and Jan. return home for a short spell then head into Baja about the middle of March crossing at TJ returning the first week in May.

By the way we just spent five wonderful weeks in Canada mostly in forest service rec. sites, just crossed back to US today eh.

I'd recommend that you cross into Baja at Tecate and take Mex-3 to Ensenada. You bypass the whole TJ mess and the toll section of Mex-1, plus you get to visit the beautiful 'wine valley' area of Baja.

Change of plans this year, we will leave Kelowna, B.C. Oct. 16 and head southeast via Spokane to Indiana where we will have some work done on the rig. We hope to leave Bremen, IN by Nov. 8 and head to Texas and cross at Eagle Pass or ?? Laredo. All new route to Indiana and back to Texas. From there we will wind our way south via the interior as close as possible to Mexico City and head west to Playa Luces near Acapulco till sometime in March.

There is a god reason why many on this board are not leaving early for Mexico. Although the rules vary slightly from Province to Province a Canadian cannot be covered under our not so great medical system if he or she is out of their home province for more than 180 days. This includes being in another province in Canada. Example: You are in Mexico/USA from January to March ( 3 months) then return to Canada and visit your family in another province for 1 month then depart in October for Mexico/USA. You have now been out of province for 7 months and technically are not covered. Returning to your home province does not reset the clock. I think BC and Ontario are a little more lenient but the others are not. There may also be a waiting period to get back into the system. This is why there are very few Canadian full timers. One great system!!!!!

Alberta Health is quite lenient in this regard.
From the "Travel Health Insurance Matters" brochure:
Temporary absence
You must maintain your Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan coverage if you leave Alberta for another part of Canada and intend to return within 12 months, or leave for another country and intend to return within six months. If you are leaving for a longer period, you may apply for the following extensions of coverage:

Four years (48 months) for absence due to work, business or missionary service
Two years (24 months) for travel, personal visits or educational leave (sabbatical)
The time period you are a full-time student at an accredited educational institute
If you are normally in Alberta at least 183 days of the year, you remain eligible for continued Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan coverage. If you are away longer but retain your ties in Alberta – for example, permanent residence – contact us to apply for continued coverage.

If an Albertan is planning to head south for the winter, all they need to do is phone Alberta Health and give them their travel dates and they will code your acct accordingly. They even have a "snowbird' option which sets up a recurring extension for you. Also, the scenario of visiting another Province then going to Mexico as described in the quoted post does not cause any problem here. No fuss, no muss, no bother.

Thanks for the advice, but we cross at TJ all the time. It is easier based on where we live and I have got the turns and exits down pretty good. I will return via valle guadalupe and cross at Tecate just to take in that scenic part of Baja I have yet to see.

If you are crossing in Texas try looking at Presidio,Texas/Ojinaga, Chihuahua. Very easy border to cross. The new road to Chihuahua City is very good.

And Chihuahua City is a beautiful place to visit. Don't miss Quinta Luz, or, the Museo de la Revolution. It was Pancho Villa's home and offices when he was Provisional Governor of the Stare of Chihuahua and is well worth a visit. A quick "Search" on my Blog will show you our visit.

The only RV Park in the area is a couple of miles South of town. It is a huge but hardly used park attached to a Pemex.

I second that. Crossing at Presidio gives you the opportunity to visit Big Bend Natl Park and the Terlingua area.

The rv park outside Chihuahua city is a real deal. Excellent hookups and always empty. I wish I could remember the name of the town, I want to say Fresnos or Fresnillos but I can't remember now.

Crossing at Eagle Pass, then a few days in Saltillo. Currently in Utah, probably crossing is a week or so.

We're leaving south central B.C. on the first nice day after Christmas and crossing at Lukeville as soon as we get there. Our plan is to take the month of January exploring our way to Mazatlan where we have a reservation for the month of February. We have heard lots of great things about Kino, so plan to spend some time there. Celestino is another place we'd like to spend some time. What are the odds of finding RV sites at these two places. Any other suggestions? This is our first trip.
