On a leg of our upcoming New England road trip, we have time to overnight at either Newport, RI or Martha's Vineyard before heading back to Boston to fly home. Newport looks like more fun for kids, but Martha's Vineyard looks prettier and perhaps better for us adults. Martha's is a little out of our way (by a couple of hours), so we're leaning towards Newport. Any suggestions?
Thanks!

If you have the choice why not Nantucket. It's some much more then Martha. There really isn't anything in the Vineyard that would impress me. Just small over priced shops. Nantucket has Museums, tour routes bike trails, cobble stone streets, rose covered walkways. It's the same ferry terminal, just a different destination. Look it up on the web. JM2Cents Bill
We have been in the Cape Cod area many times but never went to Martha's Vineyard until last September. Boy were we disappointed. Nothing there to ever make us want to go back. We also went to Newport and did enjoy the area. However we are a retired couple so have no idea if children would enjoy the area.
The kids would like Cape Cod better then either, much more to do for them. How about a half day whale watching or blue fishing trip out of Provincetown on the tip of the cape, P-town itself is always an interesting walk thru. Mystic Ct. has the aquarium and the seaport. Nantucket could be cool if you take the fast ferry and rent bikes or scooters, maybe even rent kayaks for an hour or so.
Be warned, traffic on Cape Cod on the weekends is downright nasty.
I know Newport is fun/interesting adults but I've never tried it with kids. Don't recall much for them to do there unless they are interested in the mansions.

I agree with Padlin - Newport is great if you're an adult, not so much for kids - esp. your kids' ages. You could def. go whale watching off the Cape - the kids would probably love that and it's a lot of fun. My best friend just did this w/ her kids last year in Hyannis and they loved it. If you're def. thinking of staying in Newport, Mystic, CT is probably only 45 mins. away. Not only do you have the aquarium, but the seaport is great, too - fun for kids and adults. Then again, in my warped way of thinking, if you're going to be flying out of Boston and if you haven't done so already, why not head to the NE aquarium there and the Children's museum? Don't know all the legs of your trip, so that's just a thought as well . Best of luck planning!
I'd say Newport, RI -- great for both kids and adults! We've been there several times and our kids are very young (current ages 2, 4, and 7) and they really enjoyed Newport and the surrounding areas. Very pretty area. Tour one (or more) of the Mansions... do the Cliff Walk... just take in the sights -- such a pretty area! Some nice beaches in the area too. We toured one mansion -- the Breakers -- and the kids loved it. They were amazed at the place. We walked part of the Cliff Walk, which again they found to be pretty neat.. the views, etc. We also spent some time on the beach. There is a great Zoo and Park & Playground area not far from Newport, in Providence, that we spent a good part of the day at.. it's called the Roger Williams Park Zoo -- GREAT Place. Very nice Zoo, and outside the zoo they have a Carousel and a HUGE (and I mean HUGE!!!) playground that the kids really enjoyed -- we spent almost 2 hours just at the playground! LOL It's a very nice place, worth the visit. The kids are still asking to go back there.. 2 years later! LOL If you only have a few days in the area... I feel you can have a good time in and aound Newport, RI.
And as was mentioned -- Mystic CT is not too far away either. Another nice place for all ages... The Aquarium, Mystic Seaport, etc.
JMO.. but I think you and your kids would really have a wonderful time in the Newport area! It's definitely an area I think it worth seeing, at least once! We can't wait to go back!
A nice campground is Melville Ponds Campground in Portsmouth, RI (which is just a few miles away from Newport). Great place to base yourself out of for the area .. can accomodate all size rigs.. very clean and well kept.. has hookups.. and a very convienant location to see the sights!
Hope this helps -- HAVE FUN!!

Plenty of ideas here. We have been to Newport and the kids tire quickly of tour Mansions so have not been back. The islands are nice, we actually like them, have biked and used mopeds as well as walk around, buy fudge etc. The there is the beach of course which is nice. Nantucket is a little more quaint than Martha's Vineyard but basically the same, the boat ride to Nantucket is a lot longer bur to either the ride is nice and part of the adventure.
The Cape itself is nice as well. Hope it all works out for you.
It was a very clean and nice CG with HUGE sites. It also has 2 water slides. It is 30min from Newport. Also if you go checkout Jamestown The island next to Newport, very quaint an quieter.

Could try Gloucester MA, Cape Ann.Try whale watching, it's an active New England fishing town. Beautiful waterfront, and the Hammond Castle tour is neat. A real medieval castle on the Mass. coast
