Great posts people. I feel like I'm reading episodes of either "The Waltons" or "Little House on the Prairie".
I also remember when the Milk Man still delivered milk 2 or 3 days a week. We got it in those quart glass milk bottles. I have one now that I collect quarters in.
I remember running behind the pickup truck delivering the goods we sold to the neighborhood people to raise money for our RA (Royal Ambassador) group at church. We would wait until the adult driving, would stop at an intersection. Then we would jump off the back, while still holding on to the chains that held up the tail gate, and see who could allow the truck to get the fastest before jumping in the spin around sitting position, described above. I let it get too fast one time and I didn't think I would ever stop rolling on that street. Maybe that is what happened to me.
I also remember the whole neighborhood full of kids waiting on the summer evenings for the "mosquito truck". When you heard that announcement echoing through the neighborhood, we would all gather in the thick fog behind the truck and run with it down the street, not being able to see anything. Can't believe we don't have lung cancer even at 50 years old.

I remember the fruit/vegetable guy coming down the street in his Diamond T truck with chain drive and no doors on the truck. That was after he retired his horse drawn wagon.
We used to have a knife sharpener. Who would push his grinder cart by hand in the city. Go house to house looking for knives to sharpen.

Now that brought back some memories. Hadn't thought of that in years.

I was raised in a town of 500 people. We had one stoplight.
I remember...
Going to my grandmother's house almost every weekend to visit. She was confined to a wheel chair in her 50's, due to arthritis.
Driving my uncle's John Deere at about age 8, baling hay in 90 degree heat with 90% humidity.
Chasing down a chicken, and preparing for the oven.
Riding on the back of my cousin's Cushman Eagle scooter.

Did anyone grow up on a farm that raised hogs?
I can remember going to my Uncle's farm when they would slaughter the hogs in the Fall. My cousins and I would "help" by not getting in the way. But I still remember the cold nights and huge fires and vats of boiling water to scald the hair off the slaughtered hogs. And those HUGE animals hanging over the vats. It always seemed to be like something from another time to me, even back then (30 years ago).

Running around at night with a jar catching "lightning" bugs to use as a night light at my Grandparent's house, I was around 7 or 8. I remember being soooo disappointed to wake up and find they had all died during the night.
I also recall about the age of 5 the ice cream truck that would come around the neighborhood. Although it wasn't called "goth" at the time, that is exactly how she looked! Extremely dark black hair, lots of wrinkles and these really long, long fingernails. I remember she kept them painted a really dark shade and they always scared me when she would hand me my change, lol.

Summers of 52 and 53, my uncle had a bait stand on South Padre Island. I spent both summers there when you could drive on the beach and go north for miles and see nothing but sand and water. There was only one hotel on the island and The Jetty's Restaurant.
Remember wasting one summer, when I worked at the CO-OP grainery and cotton gin 12 hours a day, seven days week. Made $84 a week(can't remember how much an hour that was-lol). Growing up in a small town has many, many wonderful memories.
Thanks for helping me remember that.
Oh yes, forgot one thing that I now remember. I was NOT 21 and had to get written permission from my mother to get married. I wasn't an adult(probably still not). Wife was 19 and did NOT have to permission. Times do change. Still got the same wife and she has the same husband. lol
Y'all have fun now!!
