Currently out of town on business with a rental car that HAS to give a full honk when locked. I want the keyfob lock, and I want the alarm, but I don't need to wake up the neighborhood just locking the car. BTW- This has nothing to do with "econo boxes". They ALL have 'em regardless of price, and will be a deal breaker on my next purchase.

My elderly father just sits in his driveway, admiring his truck and making the doors lock, lights flash and horn beep! No kidding! In 14 months he has WORN out his key fob!!! Good thing he lives in the country. It's the first vehicle he has owned with a *clicker* So, it's a Boy with a Toy Thing for him, hanging off his belt clip. Something to play with??? hahaha
I keep telling him I am having trouble ordering a new one that matches right, so he has been without his toy now for over 2 months. He said he sill misses it.

Car alarms are nothing but irritating. I don't even pay attention to them going off in parking lots anymore because they are usually false alarms. Call the cops because I hear one? Nope. My DH and I just commented on that the other day, because folks have been so careless with them, they are useless. I set my alarm to off with my key fob. If they want my vehicle, they will take it anyway, so why have the extra damage? I have the vehicle set to flash the lights when locking/unlocking. That way I know it is locked/unlocked without disturbing anyone. I don't lock my vehicle at the campground (or at home either for that matter). If I am that worried about someone stealing something from my vehicle when I am sleeping less than 20 feet away in what amounts to a tent on wheels, then I need to find somewhere else to stay!

Car alarms have been in cars for a long time and car theft keeps going up. Auto makers did a good job of selling them. Every night in the campground you can hear all the horns beeping as everyone gets ready for bed. Then you have someone that is not sure how to work alarm so the do it over and over. I have offered to fix a few alarms for people that had alarms that kept going off but have not had anyone take me up on the offer.

Guess what - three pages of your useless rants and I'm not motivated to change a bit. You can either learn to accept it or be annoyed. I'm going keep doing what I'm doing and you can keep doing what your doing! I'll use my car alarm any darn way I please, as long as I'm paying for the car, that's my right. That's my choice and it seems you've selected your choice.

This thread is more entertaining than the people who have trouble understanding how to lock thier cars with the fob!

MichDoc wrote: A few years ago, I got my first new vehicle with the electric "fob". On a camping trip, as I was getting up about 6:00 am, I hear a horn going off - over and over. After complaining to my wife about the inconsiderate S.O.B. letting his alarm keep going, I looked out and saw MY headlights flashing. I shut it off, (it apparently was set off by my pocket knife in the same pocket is all I can figure)...............
That happened to us once, early in the morning when my DH was headed to the shore for some fishing. He apparently had something in his pocket that hit his key fob and set off our horn. He didn't realize it was our truck and kept walking. I didn't have a set of keys to shut the silly thing off. So off I go down the trail to get him.... still in my PJ's By the time we got it shut off and I got back to our campsite a few of our neighbors were up & outside and there I was in my pajamas. More than a little embarrassing! For some reason my husband thought it was very funny I have to admit, looking back it's funny now......

I really couldn't care less about a chirp or a little toot from a horn. Honestly I think we are getting a little picky here.
Now lets talk about the guys with diesel trucks and 6" straight thru exhaust that fiqure thier truck needs to idle for 3 hrs per day. I'll take a horn toot any day of the week.

I use the remote to lock the doors during non-quiet hours and will manually lock the doors during quiet hours.
Last year when we were at Watchman campground in Zion 2 parties were beeping their car horns using their remotes back and forth to each other for about 15 minutes. Drove me nuts!!!

The problem is if it`s a factory alarm they set themselves after 20-30 sec. even without the remote. when you press the lock switch in the car and close the door they still set. now on most cars, if you just push down on the lock buttons and close the doors the alarm shouldn`t ?! set.
Now don`t get me started on the aftermarket alarms (junk)!!!! why would you put an aftermarket alarm on a vehicle with a factory alarm?!!! I have see this all the time!
