I was told to not use the gen. to put slides out. Should batteries be used to put slides out?

I use the batteries to put the slide out on the MH. If you are concerned about draining the batteries, I see no reason that you can not use the gen. Come to think about it, I probably have.

I always use the gen or shore power to run the slides. It is a big drain on the batteries

Wether the ginny is running or not you are pulling power from the battery. The convertor with the ginny running is just raising the voltage a little which is better for the slide motor than low voltage.

I always use the generator or shore power to operate slide. Either way the battery is the primary source but having power from converter charge helps keep the voltage up.

As long as you do not disconnect the batteries they will be used to operate the slide. I suspect what you were told is to not disconnect the battery and use the generator only. This puts a extreme load on the converter.

Ditto, I usually start the gennie or plug into shore power before operating the slideouts, I also start the MH before lowering my jacks.

When I purchased my motor home the dealer told me the best option was to always start the motor home engine prior to moving slides or jacks. I'm sure generator is just as good, but I always just start the engine.

The only problems I see in using the generator to move slides in and out are
1: While the slides are "Between states" Generator exhaust may seep in via the gaps in the seals.. This should not normally be enough to cause issues as the slides do not spend that much time "Between States" (Between in and out)
2: The sound of the generator could mask "Trouble Sounds" in the slide system
3: Overload of a cheap converter (not a problem with my PD 9180 + Wizard)
