We have a 2002 Chevy 2500 with the 6L engine and the 4.10 rear end. We have the towing package so the truck has a transmission cooler, but when we haul thru the mountains or up any long grade the transmission temperature eventually gets up to the red warning area. Our trailer weighs about 8k lbs. when fully loaded and the truck is rated to tow 10.4K lbs. so there is no problem with over loading. I have a friend that says I should not put a second cooler on the truck. I am concerned about the transmission fluid getting hot so often. Is there a problem with adding a second cooler in line with the current one?

I think you have something wrong with your truck... had the same truck and similar trailer all over the Rockies. Never saw that. GM HD trucks in general are very well cooled.

Is your torque converter clutch locking up?

I think you need to look for the cause and don't just treat the symptom.

Try changing your transmission fluid with a synthetic first. Synthetics resist high temperature degradation, keeping your tranny from forming varnish deposits and losing efficiency. You should have the tranny professionally flushed first. That by itself may solve the issue. If you decide to go with replacing the cooler, change out the old one with one bigger trans cooler, instead of adding the complexity of 2.

I know this is a dumb sounding question, but I have learned to never overlook the obvious.

Are you using the Tow/Haul mode? If not you should be.

Engineer9860, thanks for the reply. I always use the tow/haul mode. All it does however is change the shift points and much of the time when I'm towing in the mountains I'm in second gear.

Thanks to the other replys also. I think that I'm going to take the truck in to my mechanic and have him check it out.

Putting in synthetic fluid will NOT solve your problem with overheating but it CAN make the transmission stand up longer to the abuse. I'd find out WHY it's overheating and work on the problem from THAT standpoint first. If you have a leak in your roof it can ruin your floor and fixing the floor won't have any effect on the roof leak.

Actually it does. Within days of the floor bring finished, another deluge will come along, ruining the floor yet again!

OK-- so are you saying that an auto tranny that is overheating will cause the roof on your house to leak?

Sounds like torque converter clutch is not locking. If you are above 45mph in second the converter should stay locked.

I had an '03 Avalanche that had the so called Towing Package. Found that was ONLY a Hitch/Wiring Harness. NO COOLER other than that small rinky dink one for the power steering. JMHO
