It will take off in 1st and shift to 2nd like normal. Basically it will work like a two speed auto shifting up and down as it would normally but with just the two gears. Sorry about all the grief in the previous posts. I was trying to explain as clear as I could, not start a pissing contest. My apologies.
Wow, to think that every 4L60E equipped vehicle I have owned since the 1994 MY (2x 1994 Caprice, 1999 S10, 04 Envoy, 04 GTO, 05 Suburban) have had second gear start, and an 08MY with a six speed doesn't have it?!
With a RWD vehicle it has come in handy during west Michigan winters.
Kevin and my...
Wife, three daughters, a son
and two dogs(brittany and english setter)
2005 Suburban (295HP/335#-ft, 3.42 axle)
1994 Caprice LT1 (260HP/330#-ft, 2.93 axle)
2003 Trail Cruiser C22
I was wondering if the 6L90E was like ktosv said with the 4L60Es, but I see that it possibly isn't.
My Blazer will start off in 2nd if I select "2" on the transmission shifter. As he was alluding to, the 2nd gear start is handy for taking off on ice, and that was the nature of the reason for my question.
Sometimes, when a first gear start is used the lower gear provides too much starting torque, and it allows the tires to spin out more easily than if a person was to be able to take off in 2nd.
:Update:
After reading the posts about starting in second I took my truck for a trial, I have used third as a start during stop and go traffic and found it went through the gears from first to third and stopped. Having lived in the Sierra's for 10 years I know starting in a higher gear does come in handy.
I took the truck out stopping and starting off in M2, I tried it several times and it appears it does start in 2nd. I even hit the - button after I got moving and it downshifted to 1st telling me it started rolling in 2nd. I then started in M3, it started rolling in 1st and shifted normal till third where it held. So it appears it will start off in 2nd when M2 is selected but will go back to starting in 1st and shifting up if M3,M4,or M5 are selected. This tranny is just too smart for me. Hope this helps, if somebody finds it works different chime in.

That is what I like about this board.
People don't mind, in most cases to spend a little time just to get the correct answer for a guy.
reno82- Thanks again. I really wasn't expecting anyone to go to this much trouble. But since you did that is great!
