Here is a link to Saltwater Farms CG.
It overlooks the Johns River, at night air boats come up it and in the morning when the tide goes out boats set on the mud bottom while people dig for clams and wait for the tide to come back in. Than go hit the road side clam sales huts.
Also very close to Owl Head ME. very interestimg little town.

I just got back from Maine,
Searsport CG in Searsport Me is where we stayed. Small CG with a lobster bake every Saturday night on the beach. Get a site on the water if you can, You will not be dissapointed.
It is a good central location, 1 hr from Acadia, 30 min from Camdem & Fort Knox and the Buck Sport Bridge.

Our favorite is Bar Harbor KOA. It's right on the water, has a playground for the kids, and is close to Acadia. Try to reserve a waterfront site if you can.

If you don't mind no hookups I suggest Blackwoods CG at Acadia. It is a NP campground with really nice sites with pretty good privacy. There is an outdoor ampitheater as well as quite a few trails to hike on. The myself, DW and DS along with the In Laws have gone there around Columbus day the past 2 years.

Wolf's Neck has some great sites, but we stopped going there when their rates went up drastically. We've been staying at Winslow Park in Freeport - very nice. Of course, you can spend a night a night or two right in Freeport in the municipal parking lot - for free (no hookups).
Camden Hills SP is great. Another favorite is Lobster Buoy in South Thomaston, near Rockland. Further up, just past Bar Harbor, is Ocean Wood CG - a super place; very simple and the owner will not tolerate noise that could bother a neighbor. A few of the sites are waterfront and gorgeous!
We've posted pictures of quite a few Maine CG's on our site (see below). Unfortunately the server is down for a few days, but check back after this weekend. Sorry about that.
Have a great trip!

Thanks SO much to everyone for their great ideas.. and for all the different areas of Maine too -- Very cool.. and appreciated! I've checked out several of the websites and made a list for my sister to take with her! They are in Maine right now... so hopefully they will check out (get campsite photos) from at least some of these places. If you have any more suggestions -- please keep posting! I will be keeping an eye on this thread often, and saving any and all ideas you people can give me. Hopefully we'll be able to make this trip sooner rather than later... like maybe next year sometime! Is there a better time to go?? What months seem to be the best? How is it is late September/Early October? If we can't get there as a family next year -- DH and I are seriously considering going ourselves for our Anniversary Getaway -- so one way or another -- I should be in Maine next year! LOL
So keep the ideas/suggestions coming... and thanks again!!
SAFE & HAPPY TRAVELS!

We loved Red Barn Campground in Holden, about 45 minutes inland from Acadia/Bar Harbor. http://www.redbarnmaine.com/
It has bingo (beano as the locals call it) in the evenings, a nice pool, and the staff are super friendly. The sites are spacious and easy in/out.

We stayed at Bayley's this year. Great place, free trolly/bus ride to old orchard beach. If you stay here, go to Bayleys lobster pound ( not the restaurant) and get the lobster roll.
