We are currently in San Jose and want to go down the coast highway 1. Any problems with a 35' fifth wheel? Any recommendations on campgrounds? Can you boondock on any of the beaches?

The stretch between Carmel and Morro Bay is a narrow curvy road with lots of white knuckle moments. Many times you will be on the edge of the cliff. I don't recommend it. There are few if any places to camp on the beach w/a 35' Fifth Wheel. Suggest you go on 101 to Paso Robles and head over to Morro Bay and go to Hearst Castle. There are places close to the Beach.

unless you are an experienced semi-truck driver, you'll probably regret the stretch between Carmel and San Simeon(Hearst Castle). it's not for the faint of heart.
unless you really want to go to Big Sur, i'd bypass that stretch.

I drove that section in our PT Cruiser. There were times when it felt too wide. There was one section of the road that had suffered a small avalanche of dirt and rocks which hadn't been cleaned up by any road crew, and it was right in the middle of a curve. There's no way I would ever drive that road in my MH.

Have to agree with previous posters. I, too, have sworn never to drive this stretch of road again. The last time I did, it was in a 23' MH and wasn't worth the stress.

Do it going north; much less a white knuckle ride. A good campground at San Simeon State Park south of Hearst Castle. Go in from 101 at Paso Robles. SR46 is the road.
Then take your tow vehicle up 1 for a ways to see the scenery. Spectacular.
