Yeeeeeeouch!!! Poor thang! I had 2nd degree burns on my leg from the tailpipe of my Harley....back in the good ol' days. So I really do feel his pain!
Sounds like you did good Julie. Give Aaron a big hug from me but don't let him step on your foot.

Lyman,
What a great idea, a pair of gloves for protection. I think I would put on the card, "please wear when handling a hot lawn mower."

Burned both my hands on the palm a couple times with hot iron. One from a piece of sheet metal back in Middle school that I had been spot welding on. The second time was making the mistake of pulling the saran wrap off a caserole I had been cooking in the microwave (Steam burn). Burned a thumb on a hunk of iron I was working with a torch because the glove I was wearing had a hole.
No salves or painkillers for me, just alot of neo-sporin, some guaze bandages, and a few re-freezable ice blocks.

Did the same thing last year on a used new mower leaned over to look at something and rested my hand on the muffler and me 50 at the time. Some of us never learn. Some lessons come hard to us don't they.

Had one from grease splatter - the salve Silvadene (I think) did wonders to ease the pain.

I spilled boiling water on my hand once and it was NOT fun. I did find that it hurt like he** every time I tried to take my hand out of the cool water bath. Finally I just had to do it. 10 minutes later the horrific pain settled down into a managable pain level. But cold did feel good!
My son spilled a microwaved dinner onto his leg and the gravy caused 2nd degree burns on his leg. Silvadene cream worked wonders.

The good part is, after it has healed, you always have really shiny skin with hardly any of those tacky ridges that you see on CSI. Of course, the few you have left make you identifiable too, and it is a lot easier.
I think I was about 56 the last time I did that. It made me wince to read the story.

Oh man Julie, that is one of the hard parts of being Mom isn't it. Can't stand to see our kids hurt.
I deep fried my middle three fingers one time, when I was straining the fryer. Got to talking and not paying attention, those babies fried up just like french fries. I worked the rest of the day with my fingers in a glass of ice and the next few days with my fingers pointed up. Didn't dare let them point down, the throbbing was bad.
Hope the son is doing better this afternoon!

He seems to be doing better today. He did decide to stay home from work. It's hard to bag groceries and stock shelves when you really can't use one hand. Fortunately, it's his left hand (he's right-handed), so it's not stopping him from playing his on-line computer games!
Glad to hear he's not alone in this type of burn -- but sorry that ya'all had to go through it! Thanks for sharing your stories. It makes it a little easier to deal with.
I once had "almost" 3rd degree burns on my thigh. I was about 6 years old and I was sitting at the table waiting for dinner. My mom was taking some hot pot pies out of the oven and one of them slid off the tray and landed upside down on my thigh! Mom said you could hear me scream around the block! Yea, that was a trip to the ER for me!
At 17, I think he's pretty lucky. This is the first time that I can remember, ever having to rush him to a doc like that. Actually, I think it's the first time for ANY of the kids. None of them have even broken a bone (yet!).
He does have a pair of leather work gloves that he really likes that he used when he was helping the neighbors shop and bale their hay. I'll have to remind him that he should use them if he's doing stuff like that again. Although, he says he's never cutting the grass there again! Thanks for the suggestion!

I changed his bandage today, so of course, we took a pic! If you're squeamish, don't look. I outlined the burns on his hand. The really white stuff is the salve that the doc put on and we have the prescription for. It seems to be working.

Once I took the pic, I put some salve on the gauze and then put it on his hand and used some vet wrap to keep it in place. We placed an ace bandage over it and he's good to go!
Thanks to everyone for their concern!
Julie
PS, Cat -- if he steps on my foot, I'd have to kill him!
