Looking for a nice camp ground in the Charlottesville area. The KOA there does not look like much. Any suggestions?
Thanks

The KOA is decent and when we were there a year and a half ago, the relatively new owners tried hard to do a nice job. Clean restrooms, etc. You are limited in sites for big rigs and there is dense tree coverage, so satellite systems won't work.
The only other option is Misty Mountain which is on 250W west of Cville off I-64 at the Crozet exit (107, I think). They also have limited sites for big rigs, but they do have some with no trees. Be sure to take a site up front at MM, don't take any on the mountain.
These two campgrounds are about the same distance from Cville, about 15 miles, making them the closest to the town. There are others in the area, but a longer drive into town.
Our daughter and SIL live in Cville and we are there several times a day.
TIP: Call ahead for reservations. Best time to go is during the week. Once football season starts, the CG's are already booked a year in advance for sites on the weekends.
Enjoy, it is a beautiful place.

It's a little further out of town, but not more than 30-35 miles so check out Shenandoah Crossing. I've not stayed there yet, but friends have and highly recommended it:

We stayed at the KOA south of Charlottesville in May 08 and found it to be very clean and quiet, however, no cell phone service, no tv service, winding road to the campground.

Cell phone service can be a real problem in/around Cville because of the mountains and valleys. We have limited coverage where we stay at Misty Mountain, so we have antenna boosters.

Make sure you eat lunch at Michie's Tavern. It's on the road to Monticello and is only open for lunch. It's pronounced like the mouse, Mickey.

We've found the pull thru sites at the KOA more than adequate. If you are doing lots of tourist type things, you won't be at the campground but to sleep. Ditto on Michie Tavern - while there be sure to visit the University of VA. Jefferson created this and his stamp is ever present. The serpentine wall and gardens, the Rotunda and the Lawn are beautiful. Great places to eat and shop on the downtown mall.

We had a pull thru at the KOA in 2007 and found it to be just fine. We spent very little time at the campground since we did lots of stuff in the area. Click here to view some of our pics of the CG and the area.
Hope this helps some.

we have a 37 foot rig and always stay at misty mountain...easy on and off the interstate yet not close enough to hear the traffic. the big rig sites are near the entrance.
We thought the koa was nice but not for big rigs..
good luck on your choice!
