A friend of mine has an F350 extended cab with the 6.4, it is a 2007 I believe. He had been getting rather poor fuel mileage with it... but a few weeks ago he went on a long highway drive, and, as he put it, "drove like a grandma"... He was amazed to see his mileage jump to just over 20mpg. As chambers posted, he has started watching his turbo boost gauge and basically realized he always had his foot buried into the gas pedal.

Driving habits can and will make a huge difference with mpg.

The salesman was telling the truth about the mpg on the 2008 6.4. Mine gets just what he quoted you and that's if I drive conservatively. Towing 14,500# it gets 8 to 10 mpg depending on terrain at 60 mph with 4.30 gears.

The EPA is the main reason for the lower mileage on the 2008 models.

The reason for the low MPGs on 08 diesels is most likely NOT the DPF.

Although certainly not the only reason the DPF has to be playing a role. When it goes into it's clean cycle raw fuel is dumped directly into the DPF to burn the particulate matter. Fuel being burnt there is fuel that is wasted as far as MPGs. One way that drivers can tell that their truck has entered a DPF cycle is a significent drop in MPG on their display until the cycle finishes.

with my 08' F450 (4:88) rear I get about 8 towing my 5th wheel. Without local driving about 10. Highway, up to about 13 sometimes 14. But never have I seen above 14. All in all I'm real happy with the truck for what it does, fuel milage isn't that bad; sure I'd love for it to be better as I can spend that fuel money on other things I don't need at camping world

In Europe we have had DPFs for more than two years now, we se NO worse fuel economy than before DPF.

My guess is that the need to keep the NOx down (propably stricter than in Europe) the manufacturers has to use a very late start of injection timing.
This reduces the efficency of the motor big time!
(and increase your EGT)

You are correct. EPA07 engines are using a lot more EGR than EPA02 engines. EGR KILLS fuel economy because it lowers the efficiency of each cylinder due to lower temperatures and lack of oxygen.

Sorry, I have trouble believing this, maybe down hill

believing what?? Numbers that mirror most others on this post are not to hard to believe, IMHO. I've ridden with him and he is cautious and drives around 60 when empty and 55-60 when pulling.

Dodge Cummins here 16.5 MPG highway, 14 City, 10-11 towing. I notice a decrease mainly when the particulate filter is in regen mode. It also seems to get worse mileage in cold weather. The EPA wants cleaner emmisions but I think with the extra fuel we're burning, it kind of negates the purpose.

I wish I could see anything above 12 mpg. The way I see it I'm getting 10-11 mpg I don't care when. Empty drive back and forth to work 10-11 mpg. Towing our 15K TH 10-11 mpg. I didn't buy this truck for fuel mileage, I bought it to tow 15K LBs +. If I wanted fuel mileage I would have got a Prius.
