Middle son has an '08 F-450 4x4 dually crew with 4.30 gears and gets 12 empty and 7-8 towing. I get 17 empty (better with cap) and 11 - 12 towing with my '05 F-350 4x4 SRW CC 6.0 and our 5er's are virtully the same weight, although he gennerally tows a little heavier than I do as he dry camps more and carries water.

His truck is now at the dealer for a low (below spec) high-pressure fuel supply issue (has left him stranded twice in the last 3 weeks with the 5er up). They are pulling the cab off to affect a repair......said they would have it a week. There is another truck at the dealer with exactly the same issue - both trucks are early '08 (Job 1) trucks.

He's thinking of selling it - I plan to keep mine.

Yes
those numbers are correct and glad to see your dealer facing up to the fact that the 08"s do not get good MPG alot of that is due to the DPF installed to meet the emission standards.Even with those numbers It's still better than a diesel pusher and I feel I've got alittle more room in my fiver than in a MH.And as my DW says with a fiver you only have to maintain one engine, one tranny, and one rear end.Not having to pull a toad and maintain it also. With my F-450 with the 488 rearend I get Max 12.5 not pulling and 9-9.5 pulling.

In Phoenix with stoplights every half mile I get 12MPG empty, my '05 got 13. Towing in the mountains I get 8-9, my '05 got 9-10. I'm rarely on the freeway unless towing but it appears to me that my '08 just loses about 1 MPG across the board.

Wait till the 2010 emissions come out. Semi driver's already gritting their teeth. In fact, the new emissions for '07 have added about 7-10 grand on to new motors and going to be more for the 2010's for the semis. Plus you have CA and their no idle rule for 5 minutes unless it meets CA emissions or built for use in CA. All the more reason NOT to visit CA.

I believe the Dodge Cummins is 2010 compliant already??

Wasn't there a TSB to add a chin spoler or splitter under the bumper on the 08's? IIRC CptSkup had it done on his F450 and it gained him mpg.

Yes it is....and without the urea injection the others say they will be using to make that target. The Cummins 6.7L (engineering team) recently won an award for this achievment. (LINK)

Yes there was. Apparently good for ~1mpg. However, the owners have to pay out of pocket for the spoiler and installation, unless they install it themselves.

Also, Dodge and Ford are now offering higher (lower numerically) gears available with their HD trucks (3.55 for Ford, and 3.42 for Dodge) to improve mpg.

There is a cost to having to have a truck that will tow 20K lbs up a 45% grade at 90 MPH. And the new diesel owners are paying it dearly at the pump.

Not me... we just got an '08 Dodge 3500 Ram. Fortunately, I was recently advised to put "air" in the tires, and what's more, I'm going to get that 6.7 Cummins "tuned-up"-- even though it's only a diesel.

Please, someone tell the caribou in Anwar they can rest easy.... I now have air in my tires!!!

Rock2:
You just hit upon the reason why so many of us who were FORD FANATICS for years switched to GM & Dodge when Ford dropped the 7.3 P/S. I still love the looks of the Ford, but my Duramax 3500 4X4 with the six speed transmission and 3.73 differential averages 15.5 in town, 19.0 on the highway and 12.5 pulling 30' trailers. I'm sure the Dodge guys will give you similar stories.
