i have 83 itasca sunflyer with an onan 4000 watt generator, the problem is the generator, after i bought the mh i tuned the generator up with plugs, took off carb and cleaned and adjusted the governor, ran great for about a year, the problem now is the gen. will run for about 10 minutes, then start surging and die, it usually restarts but then only runs a minute or two and dies again, ive changed the plugs and adjusted the carb and governor to no avail,im mechanically inclined and not afraid to tear anything apart, but this thing has me baffled, i usually only run the gen. on the way to campsites, and i usually start it it every week or two and let it warm up, especially in the winter, anybody have any ideas, i have not replace the points, as i dont feel they are the problem! any suggestions? thanks,
Spray some starting fluid in the carb when it starts to sputter or quit. If that causes it to run, probably not electrical...look at fuel delivery upstream from there.

I had a surging problem with my Onan 4kw. In my case the problem was due to oil foaming and causing the oil level switch to close killing the ignition until the the level came up then it would restart. The result was a continual surge. The oil level switch activation can be checked by unplugging it since it is normally open.
I changed from whatever oil was in it when I bought the motor home to 30 weight and eliminated the problem
My 5.5 kw Onan had an intermittent run, surge, and die then restart after a few minutes problem. That was caused by an air leak where the rubber fuel line connects to the metal fuel line at the tank.

thanks for the help guys, taking advice from my brother i pulled the points filed em down and reset the gap at .021", the thing purrs like a kitten, ran rooftop a/c and portable a/c for about an hour and low and behold it runs great, i was a little skeptical, but the points had some pretty good pits in them, and it seemed to have solved the problem, so i ordered new points as filing is usually a band-aid fix but thanks for the reply's!
