Hello, I'm wondering if anyone has had this done or knows someone that has had this done.
05' Dodge, crew cab, dully 4x4. Big heavy truck. Its has the 5.9 cummins and only 47k on the clock with a 5spd.
Now this truck belongs to my good camping buddy, he uses it mainly to pull his 34' trailer and he is as good with the clutch as anyone I've known.
Now, question;
47k miles seems very low to me for this truck to need a clutch, I thought maybe he had a rear main seal leak and possibly has oil on the clutch but the dealer looked at it and said no.
He is slipping in high gear going up hills.
Now another question;
Dealer want $1,900 to put a clutch in this truck. What?????? $1,900??
I couldn't believe the price quote he was given. Does this seem like a fair price or should he go shopping?
I just had to ask you all to see if anyone else has run into this before.
Thanks for your time,
Roy
May the roads and skies always be clear, and the firewood nice and dry!!

If the truck has been driven properly there is no way it should have a worn out clutch! I had an 01 CTD 5 speed with 100000 miles towind a 31 foot trailer and no clutch issues.
I would check out some independent shops for a better price. Replacing a clutch is not exactly rocket science.

47k seems very low for a STOCK truck to need a clutch. Is it heavily modified? my 02 has 102K on the stock clutch.
Give this guy a call.
very nice and upstanding guy. I don't know how close you are to him though.

I checked out his web site and found that he wants up to a $1000 for a clutch kit, now granted that it includes a flywheel which I would think could be re-surfaced but man that is a spendy clutch kit!
This truck is totally stock and still under factory warranty. I figured something had to happen to that clutch for it to go out this early but the dealer says clutches are in no way covered under warranty. No matter what!
If the parts are close to $1000 than the dealer wants say $900 for labor than that still seems high to R & R the trans and replace the clutch.
I will probably end up under it helping him do the job as he just doesn't have the money right now to pay that much to have it done.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this.

I agree it is low miles to have to change a clutch, but tell him watch where his left foot rests. If he leaves it on the pedal even a little pressure can cause problems.
If he can do clutches I sure wouldn't be talking to a $1900 dealer.

Okay something is amiss because 05 Dodge Rams have a 7/70k mile warranty on the drivetrain. The 05 Ram also has a 6 speed manual, not a 5 speed.

Hub I believe the clutch is not covered by that warranty in Dodge Diesel Pick ups, at least they didn't used to be.

The flat rate manual calls for just over 12 hours for a Dodge 4X4 diesel pick up to replace the clutch, if I remember correctly.

Couple of thoughts:
1. Try this in the Tow Vehicle forum - more "exposure".
2. Go to one of the (many) Dodge Diesel forums, such as the
DieselTruckResource dot com - for -lots- more info.
