I would do as some here have already said. Take the refund now while you can. Then if you want to buy an already-built unit from them later on, pay for it when you pick it up. You can always add optional stuff to it later on your own time line.
The thing about their product is, number one, it is very good, and number two, they have practicaly no direct competition, as I don't know of anyone else building campers with that type of design and quality combination. Maybe there is some company in some other part of the country that builds them like Callen does, but I never seen one.
After your experience, there is no way that I would put any money in there hands until I had seen the finished product. Waiving the prepayment is the least they should do for you.

I would normally say no way, but it looks to me as if this company can be trusted. If you do decide to let them build it I would think that a fair discount would be a price to $5000 and a contract that shows that you have paid $2400 and a pickup date. If you do decide to let them build it be sure it is on paper, that way they have to back it up
I think that it would be the right thing to do, they have showed honesty by coming on here and admitting their mistake...

If you have anything to do with this company you are enabling their bad behavior. These kinds of unethical business practices litter this forum. Any one that does business with this company is only compounding the problems that consumers of recreational vehicles experience on a daily basis. This company should not be allowed to get away with these types of business practices, now or in the future.
I agree with Don's and Steve's assessment, and Steve's suggestion especially: get the cash back from them, cleared at the bank. This would show Callen's good faith; then, afterward, I'd assess going with a re-order.
Doing the above in the order written would show that Callen has some financial resources, and can refund your (original) advance/build deposit. Then, allow x time to elapse and assess if Callen is in a financial position to go ahead with a re-order: visit them, and assess if they are still building units by physically seeing some activity there, then handing over your deposit with a written contract...
Under no circumstances would I send them any additional money at this point.
Take your refund back now...then if you stil want them to build the shell have everything in writing and pay them WHEN you are completely satisfied with what they have built for you and take delivery...

Keep us informed...
this sounds to me like the most reasonable action to take.

This is an untrue post. The post on this Thread have been above board, on topic (excluding your post), and free from name calling.
I considered closing this thread several times, but did not. As to allowing a manufacture to post, it is not that unusual, depending on the circumstances. The OP post made very serious allegations toward the manufacture. The manufacture made a response to those allegations. Considering where it is now, between the OP and manufacture, it appears it haves a good chance for happy ending.
I will give it another thirty minutes or so, for additional post, and then lock the thread. Keep in mind, the progress made between the OP and manufacture could be a fragile one, any post should be made accordingly. I encourage the OP to start a new thread informing us of the final outcome.

That's interesting Wayne. I had understood (apparently incorrectly), that there was a strict forum stance on manufacturers not registering or posting to the RV.net forums. I for one would actually welcome manufacturers on the boards (as long as they didn't get too commercial or turn their posts into advertisements), but again, I thought it was strictly off-limits.
