Hello, I am looking to full-time in about 2 years...I would like to work for a campground when I am able to start full-timing. My partner is a nurse...she has worked agency jobs in the past. (works for nursing home right now) I am recieving a VA pension and would like to know if there is any one out there that has worked for a campground and they have been paid under the table? I know that people can work for their site and then they also recieve pay. If I am on a payroll, every dollar I make I lose that from my VA pension.
If you want to work under the table, it is best to keep it very quiet, not post it on the World Wide Web!
You should be able to barter and get free things in exchage for your services. But both are actually taxable, just like earning an income. Just that bartering is a lot more difficult to detect.
Also if your "Wife" works in the campground, say taking reservations and processing paperwork for incoming people, and gets paid, I guess it does not change your VA pension. Does the campground host really care who does the work, as long as it gets done? You just tell the campground who to pay, and who really cares?
My guess is that you are in a situation where you can not continue your old job, and want to do something else. I suggest taking it easy, and recover from whatever put you in that position.
Also if you can apply for a handicap parking card, you can also get a Golden Access Card for free. It allows camping at 1/2 price at all national campgrounds, Corp of Engineering sites (like hydroelectric dams and lakes), and many other Federal campgrounds. There are some exceptions, such as no discount at one campground in Yellowstone that has electric services, and no discount for cave tours.
If you trade some work at the campground for a week of free camping that is worth something like $150 per week, then how many hours do you have to work for that $150 discount for the week?
I would rather spend a week at a corp of engineering campground with full hookups for about $10 per day.
Good Luck,
Fred.
Money can't buy happiness but somehow it's more comfortable to cry in a Porsche or Country Coach!
There are campgrounds that will pay under the table. We have worked at parks where I have been on the payroll & my husband was not. You need to ask that before accepting a job. Some campgrounds want to put the hours for pay in one person's name so you can just use your wife's name it will notaffect your disability pay.
Thank you for your input...it is greatfully appriciated. I have been using this forum for the past couple of years and I continually keep learning...I love that...in all areas...I have met, although not in person, some wonderful people. Thank You
If the campground is "paying you under the table" than you probably can also assume that the campground is also not covering you with worker's compensation insurance. So if you are injured on the job you have no coverage for your medical bills, earnings, etc., that are usually covered. And worker's compensation is a required coverage for employers under most state laws. And federal laws if the campground is on a federal property.
And what about business liability insurance that would cover an employee if a customer is injured or their property is damaged?
I have not been paid under table...I do the honest thing...I pay taxes...I understand the liability a campground has if someone is injured. I know people that have permanent sites that might not like yard work done, that I could do...lawn care for individuals...not campground...I guess I did not word it right...I certainly do not want to cause a problem...or get anyone upset...I can sleep at night knowing that if I would get audited by IRS tomorrow I would be fine...I just wondered if...I certainly do not want to be dishonest...Thank You

we had a stay in home health care worker stay with my parents. unlike lots of folks, we paid her FICA or whatever it was. when she found out that we were moving them out of state and she would be out of work, she developed a 'strained back" from helping/moving them around. It was so nice to just say send it in to the proper govt. agency and see what they say.

As an employer the last 20 years you would not believe the amount of times that I have been asked by people to be pay under the table.
As an employer there is nothing in it for you but trouble, if they are hurt any place they will go to the doctor and claim you as there employer and they were hurt on the job. If they decided to draw unemployment they will list you as there last employer.
Three years back I had an employee fall of of a roof, Some say he jumped, this I come to find out was his 4 workmans comp claim. Fortunatly I have never payed under the table and his bills where covered, and, ARE STILL BEING COVERED.
Remenber that a person that will cheat one person will have NO problems cheating you.
