I have read here that canned pumpkin will firm up stools. Our 7 month Dobe is about 60 pounds and unfortunately drank too much lake water last weekend. She was good until Sunday night when she got the squirts. Monday was better consistancy...but has never returned to a more solid bm.
I bought some pumpkin at Whole Foods and am wondering just how much to feed? Looks like some folks use a teaspoon, tablespoon or just a "dollop". Is it just once a day?
Thanks in advance!

The dog I have fed pumpkin to is smaller than yours, at 20ish pounds, I was told to give him a tablespoon mixed with a bit of his kibble. I did that twice in one day about 10 hours apart and it really helped.

So I am guessing here but with a much larger dog perhaps two tablespoons would be about right. Good luck, I hope she feels better soon!

We were just told to give our 70# GSD about 2 TBSP twice a day. We our at a campground with high iron and sulpher in the well water. It was making our dogs sick, our friend recommended adding the pumpkin to their diets.

Hope this helps.

I wonder if it has the same effect on humans. I'll have to try some pumpkin pie next time I have a problem of that nature. I'm not a nurse, my wife is and I mentioned this to her for are dogs. She didn't know a thing about it.

I agree with the rest. Two tablespoons twice a day.

I am an expert in this area since my dog has a sensitive stomach. 2 tablespoonfuls of puree pumpkin (not pie filling), mixing with food 2x a day is about right. But I'd cut out his kibbles and substitute with canned gastronomic formula (from the vet) or boiled chicken & rice.

Its distinctly possible that what she got wasn't too much of the lake water, but of whatever critters were in it. In my experience, things like giardia and spirochetes (sp?) tend to produce loose stools and otherwise normal activity and appetite levels. If the issue doesn't clear up in a day or so, you want to get a sample to the vet for testing.

I thought pumpkin was used to soften the stools. Thats what I gave my chi after his anal glands were removed and it made his stool really soft.

My own doctor said, "Its never a good idea to stop diarrhea. The body is trying to make the bad stuff leave. Why stop it?" I saw his point and apply it to my dog, too. I just make sure he has plenty of fresh water to drink. And if it lasts more than a couple of days, we go to the vet.
