I figure if you want to know the skinny on something go straight to the people that know the most. Hoping that you kind folk can help me make a decision on GPS systems. Considering buying one but not sure which way to go, I know they all do the same basic job, but which are the most up to date, are there any that can be updated via pc interface? Are there ones that will let me program in specific attractions or fuel stations as we travel. Essentially, which seem to be the best of the best without costing the combined net worth of a small country. I've done a search but most of the results seem biased towards a brand they are trying to sell. Thanks for the help.

We just picked up a new Tom Tom at Sams Club. We had a very old model, so it was time to upgrade. The new one lets you add locations, upload changes, etc., to a users area so it can be shared. I really like it.

We recently purchased a Garmin Nuvi 250W. I still use MS Streets and Trips for route planning. But the Garmin is outstanding for use as a co-pilot. You can get fancier ones, but this one will do the job you want very well. A little more pricy that the Tom-Tom One, but I found it on Amazon for $215 about 6 months ago. I like the much brighter screen on it vs the Tom-Tom One. That was important to me to be able to see it good in bright sunlight with my shades on.
Happy Camping.

I use the Garmin Nuvi 200. It is about as cheap as any and works great. My DW is our navagator and watches the screen. The nuvi talks so you don't have to watch for where to go. I have found its GIS maps to be very accurate.

Knowing your type of RV might help us to make better recommendations. For example, our Class A has room for a laptop and we run Delorme's Street Atlas on it for our GPS. At $49 (Best Buy this week)for everything, it is about the cheapest GPS solution available. I download POI files from the Discovery Owner's websites and they have a wide range of things from Cracker Barrel to Wifi CGs to Wal-Mart to Flying J and the other truck stops. We use a cheap inverter to keep the laptop running.

For a situation with less room, the Garmin Nuvi is a good choice.

None of them are truly "up to date". But they are always upgradable, usually on an annual basis.

We had a TomTom 300 first, then gave it to our daughter since the F450 came with it factory installed. We recently bought a new DVD and think they must have outsourced the directions to someone in outer Slobovia who doesn't know anything about American roads.

I purchased a Street Pilot 7200 a couple years ago for our RV. I've been able to update maps and software without a problem, I couldn't use it in my car very well because of the size. I got a Street Pilot c550 for my car. Almost the same unit, so there wasn't much of a learning curve, but I've picked up a couple new options. The big one is it's bluetooth compatible, so I can use it as a speaker phone. It picks up the saved numbers from your phone so that you can just scroll down through the list and place a call, if a text message comes in it can read it to you. It's kind of nice. I found this unit on line for almost half what I could get locally.

We use a Tom Tom and would not travel without it. It is easily updated via computer interface. But since this is the only one I have ever owned so I can't really speak of comparison.

Read these reviews from CNET. This is a short article from Consumer Reports. For the remainder of the info and the ratings you'll need to go to your library and look at the July 2008 edition.
