We purchased a board from one of the catalogs you get in the mail that offer all kinds of things for the home. It is a reinforced type of man made material that folds for storage, does not weigh a lot and you place it under the mattress when you have the bed pulled out for use. After use it can be stored on the floor under the sofa. It cost about $20. We have used it about 2yrs and find it does the trick. Can't remember the name of the catalog but have seen it in several catalogs. Hometrends may be one that offers it.

This website claims to sell mattresses that eliminate the problem, I haven't tried them.

From their website wrote:

You are going to like the sleep you get on your new sofa bed mattress. The foam is of a quality that stores do not carry. It's far better than the mattress that came with you sofa bed.

People need not dread the idea of sleeping "on the bar." The bar is not a problem for us. Your sleeper sofa mattress can stay crushed inside the sofa bed for years, and will spring back like new, when you need it.

You didn't say if sofa is jack-knife or hide-a-bed. We tossed our jack-knife and replaced with as big as would fit Flexsteel hide-a-bed with up graded air/inner spring combo. When inflated mattress is over foot thick and very comfortable. When deflated mattress folds right up with the sofa.

It's usually just two of us traveling so we sleep forward on this great sofa mattress and converted rear bedroom into a open multi-purpose room.

I can't remember where but I have seen a type of fold up board (I think in the back of some magazine) you can use to put between the mattress and the spring. You could probably make one out of a sheet of plywood and saw it in three pieces. I can't think at the moment of how you could attach them together though. Duct tape (multiple layers) may work. Hinges would just be another thing to poke you in the ribs. Maybe a set of those hidden type hinges. There has to be some way to fix it. Good luck whatever you do.

We had similar problem when the in laws complained about being uncomfortable. I removed the mattress from the sofa and just place the mattress on the floor and use it like a floor mate. No more complaints.

We have one in the house like that and I purchased the sofa that way so my in-laws will not stay too long.

We like to pull down the couch and watch TV with our large dogs, and cat laying beside us. I always landed in the middle on that hard spot. Went to Bed Bath & Beyond and bought Memory Foam for a double bed. Works like a charm! I even fold it up with the couch - we keep a cover over it because of the "kids"
Hubby falls asleep out there now that it is comfortable.
Good luck!

I've slept on ours once opened up. I couldn't move the next day. I think it's more comfortable not to open it up but to sleep on it in the sofa position. I've decided the next time our friends sleep on it opened up I will put the dinette cushions on it.
