not exactly alone, but i did not know how to label the subject.

i am planning on a trip for summer of 09 by myself with my 10 yr old son. we plan to go from va to south dakota.

do any of you experienced or more seasoned traveling tent campers see any problems with this? especially as far as safty goes?

i only plan of driving about 6 hour days. for just spending a night on the way out we plan on staying at hotels. but once in south dakota i am planning on campgrounds, where we will spend more than 1 day at a time.

any advice you can think of would help me out. anything special (equipement) you think i will need. or do you think i am crazy for even thinking about doing this as a single mom.

Go, and you son will 11 by then. One gal on here used to bring a pair of men's big old work boots, kept them outside the tent after turning in. Good Luck and enjoy. Bill

I think you would be crazy not to go. What a lucky boy! My guess is he will remember the trip forever.

I agree.
You will no doubt encounter challenges that you didn't expect and get through them. It will be an awesome time!

Come back and yell at me if you do it and regret it. I'm pretty sure you will not be yelling at me...

I can't speak very much on safty in today's world but, I went on a similar trip with my husband and his 2 sons about 40 years ago. We stayed mostly in state and national parks and had no problem with saftey. Just if you are in bear country listen to the rangers and follow their rules.
One suggestion is that you and your son should take some smaller trips before the big one if possible. When setting up and breaking down camp have assigned jobs for each of you. Your a team and that makes the work much easier. Then you can both relax and enjoy each other.
Good luck

I agree with Rita Black, take a practice trip at a local state park. I camp alone, and I feel safe in state parks or private park like a KOA if you cannot find a state park. The parks are full of families large and small, and of all types. You will be fine.

As a woman, you might want to keep your keys nearby at night so that you could hit the panic keyfob just in case.

I just returned from the Smokies. It was fantastic. As long as you can handle your gear and your tent is in good condition, you will be fine. Be sure to plan well. Some parks are self registration and you need the exact amount of cash. (Always loop through the campground to pick your site before paying.)

Although I prefer state & national parks, many people like private campgrounds better. I also spent 3 days camping with my daughter who is also a single mom. We stayed in a small private RV campground that gave you free firewood.

I just returned and I'm already planning my next trip. Enjoy!

thanks so much. you all are making me feel much better about this. we have taken a few trips together so far, with the whole family. but for the south dakota trip, it will just be my son and myself. we are the only 2 that can take the time to do it.

now i do think it makes great sense and very good advice that i should take just the 2 of us and do a trial run. there is a small park up the road from us, so i will check into that for just the 2 of us and everyone else has to stay home. that will for sure give me a much better feel about doing this by ourselves.

you all will have a bit of a wait however for the big trip since i don't plan on that til june or early july 09.
