There's nothing wrong with people who choose not to spend $$ on an RV when tents are relatively inexpensive. These days you can get portable air conditioners for tents as well as small refrigerators. With a plush air mattress I can see being quite comfortable in a tent. We tent camped for years and loved it....and it sure was cheaper.

We tent camp because, we want to go places that you can't take an RV. I also love nothing more than to be out in the forest and hear nothing but the sounds of nature, no generators, radio, DVD's, screaming kids, etc. I doubt I would get woken up in the middle of the night by the call of a screech owl if I was asleep in box. We could certainly afford an RV but, it just doesn't apeal to me the way that tent camping does. With the right gear you can be very comfortable tent camping, I know we are.
Since this is the tent camping section of the forum perhaps you should have phrased your question with a little less of a mocking tone.

Each has their pros and cons. There isn't a RV style that I haven't spent a night in. I tent camp now. Will RV again too.
Get what makes you happy, and get your ego in check. That big honker won't let you get into some of the best sites that nature has to offer either. Everything has a trade off.

I haven't done the A/C thing. I Summer camp in the mountains. No A/C needed. About the mattress thing, though, you are right. I have a Cabela's XL cot and matching 3" pad for tent camping. It is super comfy!
In my tent I use a small rug, my cot, chair, table with little tv/dvd player (sorry Kamper_Kelly but some of us are sports junkies) and I'm happy as can be.
The family MudChucker talked about obviously needs to be more prepared for cold weather tent camping. It's a lot of fun if you bring the right gear. Miserable if you don't.
I love my TT, but it doesn't do 4x4 trails very well...
When the wife and kids go, we bring a tent for the teenager and whatever friend she brings.

When you see a tent outside our travel trailer it is because that is where the kids stay. Even though we have a very reasonable sized travel trailer (26 ft) we camp for a month in it during the summer and so all the clothes, toys and yes the kids go in it at night.
During this last summer we had a freak thunderstorm out of the blue and I woke up hoping all was okay with the boys. They never woke up and never got wet since our 12 year old Wenzel tent did a good job.
We also own a very large Coleman tent and still camp about half the time in it. There are places the travel trailer won't go, toys we may want to take that require we tow them, or I just won't spend the money to buy that much gas to travel that far.
We took a trip to Yellowstone last summer as an example for 14 days and did it in a tent. Even with the cooler weather we had no problems in our tent. I don't know about the snarky reply here but my Coleman stove, lantern and everything else I own of that nature has no problem starting up no matter the time of day. My Little Buddy Heater could be pressed into service if I felt the need as well however I much prefer camp fires over it or the heater.

Give the guy a break. I'm glad you can determine his "mocking tone" from one sentence. Maybe he was genuinely curious and did not understand why one would do this. After all, he is from the city!
