Pilots complain bosses forcing them to fly uncomfortably low on fuel.
When you read the headline and the first bit of the article, you start to think that pilots are landing on fumes, when, on fully reading the article you get to:
Quote:

But Scovel's review of 20 Newark-bound flights — out of 151 reporting low fuel on approach in 2007 — found none with less than 45-minutes worth of spare fuel.
So they are not landing with "low fuel", just less than they would "normally" do (but still over the FAA mandated lower limit).

I guess I should be used to it by now, but these over the top, "THE WORLD IS GOING TO END (someday)" type headlines/articles are getting old. A while back, it was all global warming ("WORLD COASTLINES TO DISAPPEAR (in 200 years if the wild predictions of a bad model come true)"), now it is gas related.

I heard today that if the price of fuel had not began to drop all oversaes flights would have had to coast in the last 100 miles at half throttle and no baggage would be allowed on board.

I'm JK, but I know what you are saying, the sky begins to fall pretty quickly sometimes.

Stories like this prove the old statement "Everything you read in the paper is true except for those stories about which you have personal knowledge."
If jumping to a conclusion was an olympic sport, we would have retired the gold medal by now.

Well, I just got done reading a bunch of genuine headlines...

COLD SPELL BLAMED ON TEMPERATURES (ya, think?)

SOMETHING WENT WRONG IN JETLINER CRASH EXPERT SAYS (are you sure?)

That kind of thing.

Fact is if the next closest airport where you can safely land is an hour away 45 minutes reserve is NOT ENOUGH FUEL

But, if you are landing a jetliner at Newark, the next nearest 5 airports are only a couple of minutes away, and there is a large selection within 30 minutes air time.

I read a quote once from an Air Force pilot that said, "The only time you ever have too much fuel is when you're on fire."

I'll remember that the next time we're told that traffic is making us circle the field in a holding pattern.

Well, at least you will know that they won't keep you circling for more than 45 minutes...

I guess I should just get used to it, but it gripes me every time. I work with aircraft and that 45 minute reserve has always seemed too much (I am the researcher on the ground and I always want the aircraft to stay up just a few minutes more, but the pilot invokes the 45 minute rule and lands). So now the news is all about how that 45 minute reserve is not enough.

A 45 minute reserve might seem low if the reserve used to be 90 minutes or something like that.
