My van was built on an early 2004 chassis and didn't come with a turbo resonator of any kind. I bought an aluminum one to replace the plastic factory one and didn't have one to replace.
I have no idea why MB felt it was necessary, I've had a number of turbo charged vehicles and the Sprinters are the only vehicle that I'm aware of to ever come with one.

Don't forget, though, that the 05 version has the problem solved. So far no one has reported that an 05 has failed. I have the aluminum deal but I wish I had a regular resonator. Why? It's because of the design of the regular resonator. It's roundish. It has some sort of baffling lining the inner walls. I'm sure it does something important (besides fail) that the aluminum deal does not do at all.

Hate to disagree but the 05&06's both fail, the latest version of oem part fails just as the originals do. The 07 3.0l diesel uses a resonator but of a very different design.
Things to keep in mind are, When the difference between specified boost and actual is more than 9psi above or below a code is set and the engine goes into limp mode, 2000 rpm max. If you pull over and shut it off it will reset and you will have normal operation until it reaches the 9psi spread. Also if you are doing a pretrip inspection of your van and notice oil seeping from the seam of the resonator, it is time to change it. Sometimes if it pops apart (never completely) it will snap back together and when it cools off again stay together until it heats up again. My advise is carry a spare, or install the eliminator.

Check the Sprinter Group on Yahoo for my experience with the "eliminator". After experiencing "Limp Home Mode" 4000 miles from home, in relatively flat country. The "mountains" along the Labrador coast are not high, but the grade can be pretty steep, one we came up in 1st at ~ 10 MPH. I can say that I'd hate to have it drop into the mode in Lake City, CO - I don't think you'd get over the mountains.

If you have an old aluminum resonator eliminator I'd advise checking to make sure it has some groves or "something" on the end that the hose is clamped to. Mine doesn't and although I had the clamp TIGHT the hose slipped out from under the clamp. Looks like the new model may have a shoulder machined in it to help hold.

while our 2006 LTV was at the service dept, we had them check and were told we have the plastic resonator. Dealer says not to worry, it has a 100,000 warranty, and all he can get to replace is another plastic one anyway IF and when we need one. Since we are leaving in a couple of weeks for the LTV rally, I do feel at least concerned. I don't want to be stuck up somewhere far from help. Should we get another plastic one to carry along, or am I (as DH says) worrying unnecessarily?

Glassgirl,
I just bought a spare for $50 in advance of a three week trip starting this weekend. So, I don't think you are worrying, just being careful.
My thought is it's better to have one available for a mechanic to install even though it won't be covered by the mfg. than it is to limp around for a day and possibly having to wait for a resonator to be delivered. I'm on a schedule for both business and pleasure and have camping reservations in place.

You are not worrying unnecessarily. Ours failed on a Sunday afternoon in a fairly remote area of Montana that was hundreds of miles from the nearest Sprinter-authorized Dodge dealer. Fortunately, I had purchased the aluminum replacement but foolishly had not installed it. I suggest that you don't bother with the plastic replacement - just buy the aluminum one and have it installed before you go.

Where do you get the aluminum ones? Our dealer says he can't find one, but if we can, he will put it on.
