We are thinking we may spend two weeks in the Buffalo National River area in late September and I have a few questions I am hoping you can help me with.

Is the Buffalo river "floatable" in Spetember?

What campground would you recomend if we want space, piece, and b centrally located to hike and canoe/kayak

What other things should we see /do in the area

I have heard thier are elk in the area? any place in particular better than others for chances of seeing them?

Thanks in advance for any information...............as always, pictures, site numbers and specfics are appreciated

I know my brother hunted some elk near there but it was on a private game place. Elk are not native to northern Arkansas.

Elk are native to Arkansas, as they are to the entire midwest.

nolsonrn,I think we were in A section, all the sites there are level and close to the river,if your going in sept the fall colors should be great, also one note the campground is down in the river valley so no tv. or cell phone service unless you have satelite dish, also the elk are on the upper part of the nat.park

We were at Buffalo Point a couple of weeks ago and the river was rolling. Wild Bills made us take a raft because we have little ones but even then, it wasn't bad because of the swift current. Unless we get some rain, it might be dried up come Sept. We were in section "D" I believe and it was nice and the sites were good sized but you can't really see the river from the camper but there are trails that lead down to it. As mentioned earlier, no cell service or antenea so bring lots of movies. Also, before your float watch Deliverance...you'll be watching the bluffs for sure.

The "Buffalo" is pretty low in September and while floatable, one would have to pull the canoe through MANY shoals rather than paddle. And, you will have to confine your paddling to the lower parts of the Buffalo as well because of water conditions. Also, it's pretty hot up here this time of year. For some outstanding paddling, try the Buffalo in March, April, or May.

Buffalo River Link

This is a link to the Natinal Park website on Buffalo River. We have stayed at Tylers Bend which is located in the middle of the Buffalo River area - it does have hookups and is a COE Campground and very nice with great restrooms - I do not think they take reservations but we were there on a Saturday in the middle of the summer and had no problem finding a site

- Buffalo point is in the extreme east - -there are several National Park campground on the west part of the river which is the most pretty and close to the elk - but they are for tenters only and do not try to take a RV down these roads - There are also some great hikes to take in this area - we have a book but you can probably find information online.

It is a long drive from the west to the east due to the curvey but beautiful drive -
