We moved here to TX 20 years ago from NJ. We thought the same thing about the hot summers...but do what we did...get a pool. You can camp all year round. Want to see lots of campgrounds? Look at my signature photolink. I'll be there are at least 15 albums of TX state parks and COE parks.

Summers are great in Texas -------------- as long as you got an air conditioner !
Howdy ! and welcome to Texas. Oh and just to let you know before you get there. Austin has this little ol' school called t.u. You'll see folks braggin' about it. Just smile when they tell you about it. But you need to know right up front that the Fightin' Texas Aggies (Texas A & M) a little ways east of there, is the best school in Texas!

Wow, thanks for all the great responses. My parents said that folks were a lot friendlier down there and I can certainly see that. I've been to Dallas and Grapevine 4 or 5 times so that's been pretty much my exposure to Texas. It was always for work so I didn't really have time to get out and see the sites.

My wife and I are flying down in October to take a look around and I'm hoping to check out a few campgrounds as well.

She definitely wants a pool. She wants one up here, but I can't justify the cost considering we camp and we'd only be able to use it a few months of the year. I just can't imagine winter without freezing my butt off, loading the stove, and shoveling. That would be a big adjustment.

You will like your camping options throughout Texas, we have, and we want to see much more.

Trlrboy's photo album is inspiring! Love the Beagle at Inks Lake as he focuses on something up a tree. Our beagle mix will sit there forever doing that!

Search Amazon and find Gary P. Nunn's CD recorded live on Austin City Limits. Play it over and over until you know every word and, by the time you get to Austin, you'll know why you'll soon love being Home With The Armadillo.

A pool is wonderful in Texas, but remember that a pool is just a hole in the ground that you throw money in, that never comes back out.

Having lied on the East Coast for the last 8 years, I was never so glad to get out of one place in my life. As they say East Coast people are different and as far from Texans as you'll find anywhere in our great country. Texas is a friendly place much more laid back, and it's hard to find someone with the types of attitudes you run across in the Northeast. Folks will actually look at you when you talk and no one is in a hurry. Get ready to relax, you'll even enjoy doing the speed limit with out getting run over. The big cities are a little up tight, but once you get into the country the living is easy. Austin, Houston, DFW are like most big cities, quite tense and everyone is in a hurry but friendly for the most part.

There's lots to see in the state, lots of history here. Central Texas, the Austin San Antonio area is steeped in the history of the state. Since you're going to be here in October, check out OctoberFest in New Braunfuls, Fredricksburg is always great. Most of the beaches you can camp on and also drive on, which will be different for you than the East.

You'll love Texas!

We believe TX is the best RV state in the US! Variety and hospitality abound. The state parks and Big Bend NP are our favorites. Enjoy!

Well I might as well weigh in to the conversation. I was born and raised in Austin and now live just of the outskirts. Austin is a great city and has beautiful lakes within 45 min to 1 1/2 hrs from there. There are campgrounds everywhere. Several things you should learn prior to getting here....always wave when passing another car on a smaller road....when speaking to a group of people always say "ya'll"....and my personal favorite saying....learn the meaning of "fixinto"....welcome to Texas!

Another saying we Texans have is, up the road a piece. It might mean 30 miles or 300 and your still in the State of Texas. Can you tell us Texans are proud of our State?
