My question to the gumflappers is this. Why is it so offensive to you that he asked about protecting himself and family? So you live in utopia where everything is perfect. Bully for you. Reality is danger is everywhere, and anything can happen anytime. He asked a reasonable question, he deserves a reasonable answer, not that he should quit camping or just not worry about it.

We are fulltimers for about two and a half years now. We thoroughly enjoy it and all the wonderful folks we meet. We would never go back to a stick house until such time as health dictates. I spent 15 years in law enforcement, and as with many other LEOs on this forum, have dealt with the scum of the earth. We always stay in rv parks, not because we are concerned about Walmart, but because we like the amenities of rv parks. When we had the stick house, it was burglarized once when we were not at home and once while we were asleep. Since rving, one of the parks we stayed at had a couple murdered, only because they openned the door at night without checking to see who it was, and then resisted giving the thief the money he was after. Another time, we had someone's grandson show up to kill his grandparents, fortunately police arrived right behind him at the rv park. Neither incident made us concerned about rving. We did discuss that we should always keep cellphone handy, turn on outside lights and look through peephole if someone knocks on the door at night, and even check during daylight to see who is at the door, before opening. We have a dog and two cats, who are very friendly, so we would not count on them. Get to know your neighbors in the park by stopping by and saying hello, so you can keep an eye on each other. We feel we are much more safe and secure in the rv parks than we ever were in the stickhouse. Enjoy yourselves, just be aware of your surroundings and use common sense when it comes to your safety.

This is starting to veer off. It is short lived if it stays on that track. Do NOT make this another "gun thread" that goes south! That wasn't part of the OP's question.

I think the OP asked what could be done to "feel" safer in a fifth wheel. Seems like a lot of us think a you know what is the answer. Legitimate answer to a legitimate question. Sorry if anyone is offended.

Get over it and have fun. Nothing to fear but fear itself.
What???
The bottim line is YOU are responsible for the safety of yourelf and loved ones. Bad things happen anywhere. It's a personal choice of how you protect yourself be it a firearm, bat, spray, dogs...as long as you're proficient and willing.
Thinking it can't or won't ever happen is living with your head in the sand. On my second trip ever with my 5'er, we had a group of four trailers in the desert. About 2am five drunk punks came over trying to steal items from our camp. I awoke after hearing my brother in an argument. Luckily we are both L.E. and both were armed. It took local L.E. over an hour to arrive to transport them. We both had our wives and children. I don't even want to think what could have happened. Remember, you don't choose who camps in the same area.
I don't dwell on the fact something may happen and honestly don't think about it at all when hiking, fishing or having fun. but I am prepared. For those that say nothing will ever happen or the original poster is paranoid,I hope you are right and nothing ever harms you or your family, but how would you feel if you or your loved ones were attacked and you could do nothing to stop it. You owe it to them to at least have a plan and be prepared.
