I just finished sanding and painting my tailgate for the umpteenth time. The manufacturer (Custom Flow) makes a big deal about the quality of their "powder coat" finish. As far as I'm concerned, it's not worth a hoot! Why can't they or won't they paint these tailgates with the same kind of enamel as my truck is painted with? My truck surely doesn't get rusty with paint peeling off every year!

I had the same problem plus the gate was starting to crack and weaken at the pivots. I repalced it with an aluminum one which is better built, looks better, latches better and is lighter.

A coat of Rustoleum works wonders and is cheap. When mine shows wear that is the cure!

Same here, painted it when I first got it, looks as good today as it did then. Sand 'er down, prime it, paint it, forget it.

Slow Six:

Do you recall where you purchased your aluminum tailgate? Do you remember the brand name?

Thanks.

sirdrake jr & alpenliter:

After you have used the Rustoleum, what kind of paint do you use for the top (final) coat?

Thanks.

Paint will last much longer with a clear coat on it. Plus it gives a beter colour match to the truck. Just remember to raise the pin high enough the clear the tailgate.... opps good thing for touch up paint!

Hi All.

Why go through all of the work of sanding and re-painting every year. Sounds like a very easy fix to me. If your not a Full-Timmer, why don't you take your 5er tail-gate off durning the winter months, and put your stock tail-gate back on. Works wonders on our TV and our 5er's Hitch. We don't even have rust on our hitch, or even the Hitch Bed-Rails. I keep both the Hitch and the Bed-Rails waxed and keep them clean. I remove the hitch after each use. After 12 years, we still have all of the original stickers on our RBW "LiL" Rocker Hitch. Good Luck. Happy Camping. Dan & Jill

Take your tailgate to a bedliner spray in place and have them spray it. Guarantee you won't have to worry about painting it ever again. I had the one on my 2002 Dodge RAM 2500 sprayed years ago. I asked them to do it when they sprayed in the bedliner.
