Reading this thread reminded me of the animated film "Over the Hedge." It's not directly related to camping, but it's a riot!

Keep the food in the car, around here, raccoons and skunks will get to it if not. Raccoons will take more food, but skunks will get you. Seen a few friends dogs have to sit outside their camper for the week thanks to them.

Many years I went camping at Devil's Lake State Park with a large group of friends from high school. A few of us were experienced campers, the majority were not. We kept reminding every one that all food needed to be locked in the cars or in my chuck box.
One evening we decided to go into the Dell's. Somebody got lazy and left a loaf of bread in one of the tents. They figured it was safe because the door was zippered shut.
When we came back sate that night we found that the raccoons had torn a hole through one of the window screens to get to the bread.

We have alot of racoons around here, and they are crafty little guys. They can open the latch on a cooler...have lost several meals to them. One night, we had carefully put away everything edible but one of the kids left a piece of bubble gum on the picnic table, next to a plastic bottle of charcoal starter. The next morning there was an empty gum wrapper, and the bottle had teeth marks through it!! We just knew there was a plugged up, explosive racoon somewhere around.

The butcher at our local grocery store puts meat in a big ziplock bag and then wraps it in butcher paper. On our last camp trip (to Heart Bar in the San Bernardino Mtns) I made the mistake of leaving the butcher paper on the picnic table next to our little camping BBQ. In the morning I opened up the blinds in our TT and was shocked to see: 1. that I had made the rookie mistake of leaving food trash outside overnight, and 2. that it hadn't been touched. I guess having the meat in the ziplock bag kept the marinated pork chop smell from permeating on to the paper. Luck me as I didn't have to walk all around the area picking up little pieces of butcher paper.
But, it also got me wondering why my BBQ has never been touched. I never clean it. I just fire it up and brush down the grates after they warm up. There are years of meat & veggie drippings collected in the BBQ, but it has never been attacked. Hmmm...

As for the BBQ, its heat. I have a small, by small I mean 12x12 charcoal grill I take with us camping, and I clean it once while we are camping, and thats on the last night after grilling. I've often left food we aren't goin to finish on it, and never once has anything gone after it. Even raccoons are smart enough not to go after something that is sitting where fire was.

Had my dog steal a pork chop off the hibaci one summer nite -- Sure glad the neighboors didn't see me chasing her around the yard trying to get it back. Washed it off poured beer all over it and threw it back on the fire - don't ask -- just young and hungry I guess. (dog old -me young)

The biggest problems we have ever had would be the bird's in the day time. They just love to get into my bread.
