What's the difference between Plasma and LCD?? I was told at a Best Buy that the Plasma run hotter and take more electricity than LCD, but you get a better picture?? There was a definite difference in pictures..You can't lay Plasma down.. What about longevity?? And maintenance?? They also said something about calibrating after you run the Plasma awhile, what's that?? Cost $300 at your house..Thanks for your replies..

Yes, plasma do all the above. However, you can calibrate it yourself depending on the manufacturer. Ours is a 50" Panasonic plasma and we went to their website and got the info on how to calibrate it, did it ourselves. The talk about the half life of the plasma but we figured by the time we got to that number the technology would be changed and it wouldn't matter. JOHO! We love the picture since we receive all our HD channels off our 50' antenna and use direct tv for the other stuff. I am just too cheap to pay for all the high def stuff off of Direct when I would have to go to a different package anyway.

The plasma TV's give you the best over all picture, tend to cost more and use more power. They are also said to have a shorter life. They were The first on the market for the flat large screens. LCD have become larger, cost efficient on purchase and operation. When I say flat, I'm talking about projection TV's, I'm referring to wall mountable. The LCD's are quite competitive to the plasma on the higher end. They will also work well in well lit rooms where projection tend to lose alot of ground. I have a 55 DLP projection at home and have to keep most of the blinds closed to see good TV. The LCD are also lighter over the Plasma but not by much. With the cost and performance the LCD wins hands down for the RV. JMHO Bill
Note: I don't have an LCD TV in RV at this time. But will when it becomes time.

I thought that there might be a problem with plasmas when at high altitudes.

I suspect it depends on who's making the purchase. We bought LCD because with my vision I couldn't see enough difference between he two.
If the difference had been distinct we would have gone with the best.

We have LCD flat screen TVs now and love them. Best advice I could give is make sure you get a good picture from all the viewing angles that you want. Some TV's only give their best picture when you are straight in front of them like when you shop in a store. It isn't until you get it home that you find out that one of you is going to have a problem and you have to start rearranging furniture. Also read that you may have a problem with "burn in" on some plasma's from the same image being in the same place all the time. Say for instance the line at the bottom of news shows.
We got a copy of Consumer Report's issue on TV's and read about both types before making our final decision. It was money well spent.

Plasmas give blacker blacks and better color reproduction but do use more power, run hotter, look great in a slightly darker room and at 8hrs a day they will last only 20 years until they become noticably dim and dont come in any size less than 47" so RV use of plazma is a Moot Question
ALL new tv's will benefit from calibration!!! out of the box they are all off set to the the show room setting and are maxed out too bright. at least change the standard Dynamic setting to "Movies" or some such thing and 300 bucks is normal for a calibrator .. they take several hours have instruments to measure light and color levels and do make a difference!!! but make sure they are accredited not some joe blow doing calibration ... You can do a calibration yourself with a disk called DVE HD essentials if you have a blue ray player or there is a std dvd model also. not as good but costs less than 20 bucks at amazon.and is a complete tutorial on HD television pictures to boot.

Yes, to all the previous responses. One other factor I don't see listed here, is that inch for inch, they are heavier than LCD TVs would be. They are also more fragile than LCD. In really simple and slightly twisted terms, a Plasma screen is a whole bunch of little CRTs combined into one package.......
IMHO the advantages of an LCD outweigh the disadvangtages in the RV environment.

as for reliability....if you compare pricing for extended warranties, you will quickly see which one will give less problems
