We are currently in Wasilla & will leave for Glenallen tomorrow. We were told by a fellow traveler that the Alaska Highway is TERRIBLE between Tok & Haines Junction. I know that area was bad when we came up in May but friends that traveled it last month said that the constuction that going on when we came through was complete & the road in good shape. Can someone shed some light on this so that we know what to expect prior to heading that way. Thanks.

The Alaska Highway from Tok to Destruction Bay is bad. They are doing construction between Tok and the border which they had not been doing when we came up the beginning of July and there are still frost heaves in Canada. They are also still doing construction around Kluane Lake. Much of the loose gravel in Canada has been packed in so those areas are better. We drove from Tok to Whitehorse last week and it was a long drive with the time lost to construction and pilot cars.

Hi - we just came down from Tok a couple days ago - yes, lots of gravel, and lots of big frostheaves! Terrible, no.... less than perfect, sure. Just allow more time than you would think. Once you hit Destruction Bay the road is very good again. Tough if you are towing something, I bet... Good luck! ST

Construction Tok to Beaver Creek. Beaver Creek to Destruction Bay is bad frost heaves. The frost heaves played havoc with my break-away brake in my toad, heated up the toad brakes. There was construction at the south end of Kluane lake. Did not encounter loose gravel. Just take it slow, I was doing 35 to 45 MPH tops on the heaves.

We drove Whitehorse to Tok yesterday, took 10 hours of steady driving. As already stated, lots of road work, 4 pilot car areas, rough roads south of Beaver Creek. Just take it easy & enjoy the scenery.

Thanks for the replies. We came through from Glennallen to Whitehorse over the past 2 days & as stated above the roads were not perfect for sure but not nearly as bad as when we went up in May. Now if the Cassiar is not a nightmare we will be in good shape. Happy & safe travels to all.

Cassier is less than perfect on the top half. There are gravel repairs although we found them okay. There is a long stretch of gravel road north of Dease Lake but it is better than I remember it 3 years ago. Then a short stretch of gravel south of Dease Lake. After that the road is good. We did come through with dry roads. The road may be worse after rain. We are now in Hyder where it is pouring rain, but the salmon and bears are finally returning.

We drove up in mid June and found the streatch between Destruction Bay and Tok less than desired but it's just another one of those areas that you slow down and see more wildlife. It took us two days to drive between Haines Junction and Tok. Much of it at 20 t0 30mph.

We chose to drive over to Chicken and stay a few days at the Chicken Gold Camp--one of our favorite places in the world--great people and then over the top of the world to Dawson City.

Remember some folks think driving the Alaska Highway is like driveing the interstate at home!

We are at Border City and will say good bye to Alaska tomorrow morning ... alas. We drove from Fairbanks today and there are quite a few 'Pavement Breaks' with at least two Pilot Car areas. Nothing was awful and we took it fairly slow.

It took us 9 1/2 hours to go 282 miles BUT (1) we filled up in Fairbanks and at Tok then topped off here at the border (2) we also stopped for popcorn break and ate lunch in Tok (3) I drove a couple of hours and I don't go nearly as fast as hubby. Other than that it was pretty steady driving.

So, those of you who just did the road, how are gas prices from Tok south? Any relief yet?
