We are trying to decide where to go on our 1st RV adventure. Wife ask me if we need reservations.... Do you make reservations or just roll the dice?

Depends upon where you go. F0r your first time out, you may not want to be so far (less than one hour) and try everything out. I would pick three or four places and call and see if they have openings. If there are a lot of spaces perhaps take your chances. It is a toss up, weekdays we go with no reservations. Weekends we always have it. In NYS you need to reserve some state parks up to 9 months ahead. Just have fun. After a while, you will learn what parks you need to make ahead and which ones you can just show up to,

I make reservations whe staying at the local state parks because more people are camping close to home. We just returned from a 2800 mile trip. Louisiana to Jacksonville to Savannah to Wilmimgton, DE and back the same route. Stayed in 1 campground going both ways and a total of 8. Made no reservations and there were plenty of sites open.

I guess it depends on where you are going. State parks are very popular. Google you state for a list of parks and try "rvparkeviews: for a list by city and ratings.

It depends where you're going. If you're using a camping type guide book for RV parks, check to see what kind of ratings each camp ground gets. Chances are, the nicer the campground rating is, the harder it is just to "drop in and see." Reservations are usually always needed.

For instance, it doesn't matter what beach in California (County, city or state beach), you'll 99% of the time need a reservation long in advance. They're just that popular.

We usually book different camp grounds in advance. LIke 6 moths to a year. We're camping about every three months and travel all over the place.

Also, we like going to places with ZERO hook ups. It makes camping that much more fun! No camping neighbors to bother us either. Just the family, quads, food, and other extra caricular activity equipment (beer/guns/fishing poles) Usually we can't bring all of our "toys" when camping in places that require a reservation. You oughta try "boondocking" sometime.

We have been traveling since April and have only not got in the place of our choice once. That was at the Outer Banks. We did not get in the park we wanted and ended up at Camp Hatteras they had several open sites. We usually give a call about two hours before we are to arrive and so far that has worked. Depending on the area weekends can be a concern. Last week, on a Friday afternoon, we got one of the last 4 spots that were reserved for walk-ins at a SP. All the reserve spots were taken.

It depends on where you are going. My husband checked to see where we could get in this week and had a hard time finding the kind of lot we want. The local state park has only about six-ten sites that you can get without a reservation so it was lucky he checked.
A national park 400 miles from here has only one reservation loop but when we pulled in after Labor Day last year there were only six unreserved sites open.
All we want are electric hookups. You have to learn the area you are in.

State Parks best to have reservations. Others have had good luck just pulling in.

Agree with first post suggesting you stay close to home for your 'shakedown' trip. Also agree that reservations are a good idea if you are planning ahead. Nothing is more frustrating than pulling into a campground after traveling and not being able to get a site that fits your needs. If you want a full service site (w/e/sewer hook ups) it is always best to reserve it. Many campgrounds may have a site for you, but many also fill up their sewered sites very quickly.
Enjoy your first trip!!! We've been RVing for over 30 years, and it's great!

I think I would call ahead. You do not want your first experience to be just driving from campground to campground. The trailer Life Directory will give you many options but the first time stay near home.

In our state, pay attention to the length restrictions! If you are pulling a trailer even though it bends in the middle, you may not be able to make the cg turns (Speaking from experience!) Recommend walkie-talkies for your backing in.

Depends on whether you will settle for less than full hook-ups, 30 instead of 50 am, backins, cramped spaces. We find that the further ahead we plan, the better we like our campground. For a one or two day stay, its likely not that important.
