It's judgement call, I use it when in hill country and turn it off on the flats, love to see the rpm's drop about 5 or 6 hundred Rpms. I just watch the truck for hunting gears. if it starts to hunt I turn it back on.

When I am towing, I use the Tow/Haul mode. It is that simple.

Absolutely!! Here's a trick when using T/H. If the tranny won't upshift after it had to downshift, and everything is back to the set speed and the extra power of the downshift is not required, momentarily turn off T/H until the tranny upshifts, then turn T/H back on. Always use T/H when towing.

Use the 'tow/haul' function whenever 'towing' or 'hauling' anything.
It's for folks who don't want to or know how to manage their automatic
transmissions themselves. Plus there are additional attributes that
only the computer can manage without undue complexity to the various
buttons/switches/etc that 'could' be there to get at these other functions.
Like locking up the TC, changing the ATF pressure, timing of the
various valves opening/closing, etc, etc.
Another area that the change in software algorithms is with the various
safeties. On that, mainly tempurature and in reference to the various
power modes allowed or not allowed for both the tranny and engine.

Even in the "flat lands" you have the wind resistance factor! I believe that still puts the same load as a carry weight or such in hills and tow haul should be on. Sort of like putting multiple sheets of flat plywood up and its not going to cause any load on the truck because its flat land! If you tow or haul, that is what it is there for.

My CUMMINS ( No G ) has been in T/H mode since day 1 . I feel the tranny gets less of a workout since it doesn't hunt between gears all the time . The TC stays locked a lot more which in turn produces less heat . JMHO
As a side note , Since you have an 08' , your T/H button may have the added feature of locking out overdrive I know they added the option after 05 ( 06' ? ) but not sure if they did away with it . Go to www.dieseltruckresource.com and all your Cummins related questions can be answered there !
