We are thinking of buying a used camper van. We were looking at Westphalias but I think that the Roadtrek might suite us better but I'm concerned about fuel economy. We are considering a 1987 350 automatic.
I would appreciate hearing what sort of fuel economy we might reasonably expect plus any other comments that might help with our decision.

about 13 to 16 mpg. James

I seriously doubt you will find any Class B of that vintage with a 350 that will give you better gas mileage than the poster indicated. In fact other than a sprinter, that is good gas mileage for any Class B.

Actually, I think the '350' _may_ refer to the chassis... AIUI, all earlier RT's were on 19' Dodges, tho' they did make some on 17', 19' and 21' Chevys starting in the early-to-mid '90's (?). But we need a lot more info to provide any better answer than James has.... chassis make and length, engine size, etc.

13-14-15 would actually be 'not bad' at highway speed for a 318 or 360 with a non-OD tranny, primitive fuel delivery (TBI or carb?), and a 'real' high-top (I think). Considering those things, I think I'd expect it too be closer to 13 than 16 unless driven slowly.

If it's going to be used for a local camper, it's not bad unless it takes too many repairs. The money saved on purchase would buy a fair amount of bad mpg. But the economics just aren't good for a long-distance cruiser.

Thanks for the feedback. I can't give more details because I'm not thinking of a specific model, only investigating in a general way so that i can decide what i might want to look at. The camper would be used for long distance trips.

But in your original post, you mentioned that you were looking at a 1987 (Dodge I presume). Its low cost compared to the newer Sprinters will buy a lot of gas.
