Every year I drain the water heater I get soaked. What is the secret to draining it without getting wet ? I follow the directions in the owners manual by opening the facuets before removing the plug but I still end up getting wet. We have a 10 gallon water heater and I think I get all 10 gallons on me. Last time I thought I would just stand to the side and let the plug shoot out and it did. I stayed some what dry but the plug shot out about 20 feet. There has got to be an easier way to drain it. What is the correct way ?

Try releasing the pressure with the pressure relief valve.

When I drain mine I first remove the plug, then open the pop-off valve then i open the kitchen hot water valve. I open the kitchen valve because it is the furtherest from the water heater, I really don't know if that means anything or not, just the way I do it. This way the water starts out slowly because it is having to draw air through the drain as the water runs out.

As DKean said, use the relief valve first, then don't stand near it as it drains.

This is what I do and never get wet, other than a hand.

Could also try opening the low point drains, letting them run till they stop. But the easiest way is to pop the valve, and then remove the plug.

I release pressure with the valve and then open both of the low point drains. When the water stops draining I remove the anode rod.
