I have a 2006 Keystone Raptor 3612DS. My son just told me he felt a mild shock when he touched the metal fender skirt above the wheels. I thought he was crazy and checked it with a multimeter. Sure enough there is about 1.5 volts running through the frame when the trailer is connected to our AC plug. With the trailer unplugged there is no voltage in the frame.

Any thoughts or advice will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Hi,

It seems like I answered this same question yesterday.

Yes it has happened to me, but I was reading a full 110 volts to ground. Tingle? That was an understatement.

With just 1.5 volts, I wonder how he could feel that small tingle? Most can not feel a tingle with 12 VDC, but with damp hands, I can feel 24 VAC in my hands.

You might have a bad ground. You might have a miswired receptacle, and in one case a RV.Net member had a missing ground on his power plug - only 3 straight blades on his 50 amp power plug - there is supposed to be a round one as well.

Also where the power cord goes into the RV, there is usually a silver box, and in that box is 3 or 4 wire connectors, and the ground one might be loose.

I think if you check from the metal frame of the RV to the damp grass or loose dirt, you should be able to read 110 volts or so.

Don't walk barefoot into the RV while it is plugged in, (or out for that matter). I know someone who's dog refused to get into his RV, and would jump when leaving it, so his paws would not touch the metal step and dirt at the same time.

You might have a missing ground in the receptacle, or might be something like a bad ground wire that serves the house. If you can not fix it on your own, be sure to seek professional help. Your son does not want to be the shock absorber!

Fred.

I had the same thing happen to me a couple of years ago and it turned out to be a loose ground wire on the converter.

Sounds like a good theft deterant. . . I doubt a thief will hold onto that door for long.

Sounds like you've nailed it down to shore power. I doubt I can tell you anything more than obvious. . . check you lines to see if you can trace what is loose or damaged.

Let us know what you find.

So what did you find?

Is your trailer plugged into a two wire receptacle?

I would recomend upgrading to a 30 amp receptacle if you only have old wiring in your house. That would allow you to safely run the A/C and microwave at the same time, and allow using the RV as an extra room when visitors show up.

Thanks for all of the responses. I will check the grounds on the trailer as recommended. I can't even feel the current it's so small. It may be a lose ground as suggested. I have a friend that is an electrician. I'm going to get him to look at my house outlet.

Fred, my trailer is plugged into a 20 amp receptacle with ground. It's considerable distance from the trailer. The Raptor has a 50 amp service. I connect a 30 amp extension to the 50 amp cord and use an adapter to plug into the 20 amp plug. I only plug in at home to charge the batteries.

Thanks, again for all of the replies.
